Hi me again...whilst I'm on hold with starting hrt during all my tests a nurse neighbour said she started taking mirtazapine low dose it's an AD but helps with sleep.  I was put on escitalopran 4 years ago after major panic attacks and depression  ( right as my peri started I now think) but this nurse said it's renowned for insomnia after long term use so I may start a small dose of mirtazapine alongside to try to get some sleep. I can take both together at low doses as I'm too scared to stop my escitalopram as it has kept my depression and panic attacks more stable I think. Anyone been on this mirtazapine thanks

I started taking Mitrazapine 2 weeks ago as I was exhausted with this anxiety & not sleeping too well & crying at work, I had lots of guidance from a member on the forum before starting it so knew what to expect, the first night took I slept for 11.5hrs it was great, I had over a week off work sick due to the tiredness & spaced out feeling, I am also on citalopram 10mg but going to taper off them slowly, since I was put on ssri's I have had bad sleep too, give them a try as sounds like you need some well deserved sleep

I used to take 15 mg mirtazapine and it us very good fir sleep, however it is notorious for weight gain regardless of the amount you eat

Thank you...I am only aiming to take 7.5mg or even smaller dose if it helps to sleep but I must admit my doctor did suggest this about 3years ago but said it will make me gain weight guaranteed and I diet and exercise to kept my weight down already and my peri is making me gain weight as it is...but now 4 years down the line of sleep deprivation I am desperate but the weight gain really worries me. Have you gained weight on it can I ask

Dee46...do you think your sleep got bad once you started your escitalopram I'm not sure if it's the cause but when I did come off it for 4 months my sleep was still bad but not every night like it is now...

Longandwinding I am on 15mg, thought it might help with the anxiety but I think my own hormones are still kicking in the background as quite high this evening, I was hoping to just take Mitrazapine eventually but is it just designed for sleep then?

Peroxideblader my sleep only got bad when I was put on ssri's, sent me into panic attacks all day & though the night I hsve only sleeping a bit better lately, I wanted to try a different AD as I have been on citalopram for 17 months & it doesn't really help with the anxiety, I haven't noticed a weight gain yet but understand that it can make you gain weight, I think lack of sleep makes you worse so I think if you took a low dose to get some sleep you will feel much better

My mother who is in a nursing home is being given this. She is on the lowest dose that you can get. She is sleeping most of the day now.
Have to say I don't like what it does to her at all. It does stop her being quite so agitated though.

It obviously aids sleep though.

No it is not just for sleep ! 15mg lowest dose helps with sleep ,30 mg is for anxiety etc. The lower the dose the more sedating it is. After initial start up your body adjusts and you won't be sleeping all the time.
I never gained weight with it.

I didn't think it was just for sleep as read some reviews & it is for anxiety too, I didn't sleep in the day if I felt tired just waited till bed to have a good sleep, back at work this week & have felt a bit sedated but that could also be because I am on the progesterone part of hrt, so no the tiredness soon wears off, I think all AD's can caused weight gain but you need to weigh up if you need some sleep & not to think about gaining weight

When I was taking Mirtazipine I probably gained a few pounds but not much. Best taken at night. No side effects from it at all. Each of us reacts differently to medication so you may not put on any weight at all. Certainly going from a size 6 to a size 12 in 13 weeks would be very very unusual.

I will be staying on escitalopram for my depression and anxiety and if I take mirtazapine it would only be for sleep at 7.5mg dose to start. You're right it is prescribed for depression at 45mg dose but I am staying on my AD I've got as it keeps me stable ish.  I really don't mind a little weight I've put on 2 stone in the last 4 years but I did lose that when I was very ill butry the forums on this drug say major weight gain not the odd pound.  Sadly I can't do anything yet I've got biopsy and scan then I'm waiting for a nurse to take bloods to send off privateky for a full thyroid blood test. Once I know the results I will try hrt then.......phew...if hrt doesn't help with the sleep I'll go for the mirtazapine...what a mess....life is never dull that's for sure.
