Tibolone versus estrogen
« on: May 10, 2017, 07:35:11 PM »

Hello ladies, how are you this evening?

Thank you all so much for your support recently, as I have been going through the wringer.

Estrogen definitely doesn't work for me any more. No doctor knows why. It's hellish.

I'm wondering is tibolone worth a try?

It seems to be a synthetic preparation that has weak estrogen, prog and test like effects. The body converts it to what it needs? It's not very clear.

A couple of ladies on here seem to have found estrogen didn't work any more, but they got some benefit from tibolone.

I know others had a nightmare on it tho.

There's only one way to find out for sure, I know... try the damn stuff. I'm just wanting reassurance and hope really...

My main symptoms are anxiety, insomnia, profound depression, lack of appetite and no sexual response. Apart from that I'm fine! (weak joke).

Thank you very much xxx

You've nothing to lose when you feel at your lowest.  Just PLEASE be mindful of the possible side effects and read as much as you can on some of our journies, Tempest just said in her post that Prof Lumsden said it either works or it doesn't, no in between.  Let's hope you gain your benefits xxx

Thanks Annie, you've already been more than kind and generous in your advice re tib. As you say, it's very Marmite!

I guess the side effects are only if it's not working.

Wonder how long to give it a go? xxx

I tried Tibolone but it gave me terrible headaches. That was the only downside.

Everything else improved, energy levels and anxiety were a vast improvement.

It's worth a go it works well for many ladies and is regularly prescribed to women post hysterectomy with endometriosis with great success.

Hi, Edelweiss! Yes, as Annie says, Professor Lumsden says it's either a success or a complete failure but I think personally that you should give it a go!

For the record, the two of us who did disastrously on it were in surgical menopause (so a lot of complex issues going on there), and the other lady who did pretty badly on it was from abroad as I recall and was in peri-menopause - this is an off licence use anyway, as it's only indicated for use in post menopausal women.

Do try to get branded Livial if you can for consistency - I have read about a few issues with the generic brands over at Patient UK regarding consistency, and we want you to have the very best chance at success!

We'll all be here to support you, never fear! So go get that prescription.......!! Hugs! xxxxx

Thank you Otes but I am sorry to hear about your headaches. It's frustrating when it fixes one thing (anxiety) but not another. xxx

I remember getting headaches for a couple of weeks (not really bad ones) and a hangover feeling in the morning for a few weeks, but as I wasn't getting the dizziness I stuck it out and they disappeared.  X

Oh bless your dear heart, Edelweiss!

I'm excited for you to try the Tibolone, I really am!!!! This would be approaching your dilemma from a totally fresh angle, and Tibolone has worked very well for anxiety in the vast majority of ladies too - yes, even problematic ol'me. If it wasn't for the turn in mood which also happened to the other surgical menopause lady who tried it after me and the dizziness, I would have stuck with it.

You might like to check out the lady's experience who later added testosterone to her Tibolone too (Blakeygray). She's feeling absolutely marvellous! xxxx

Hi edelweiss,

Just seen this thread.

I am very pro Tibolone, it was the only HRT that helped my moods/anxiety. Unfortunatly after 4 months the dizziness (side effect got worse

Thank you Warwick. Yes it was your story that inspired me to try it initially. I am really grateful to you for being so positive.

I hope you are doing better now - and I wish for health and happiness for you xxx

Hi edelweiss

As far as I know it does not convert Tibolone into what it needs! It just breaks down into 3 products, two of which are oestrogenic and the other is weakly progestogenic and androgenic but works accordingly in different tissues. There is a lot of info on it out there - I did read up on it when the others all started taking it but I've forgotten it all now ( doesn't take much at my age ::) !).

Good luck with it :)

Edelweiss,
Read my diary in 'Personal Experiences' and if you have any questions ask away.
It's truely been a life changer for me, I think I'm one of the lucky ones that it works well for.

Hoorah and very best of luck, Edelweiss! Truly, I think you'd be fine to start with half a tablet for a few days and then build up to a whole tablet. The dizziness and spaciness which you may get in the beginning is normal - I think most have had it at first. Most of all, you should feel caaaalm - this is another thing most of the ladies reported (me included - and why I was gutted when it didn't work out)!

You are going to be just fine - we''re all here for you! Start a diary thread of your own if you like, then we can all pop by and give you lots of support. Just take it one day at a time (says she, who can't heed her own advice)!

Much, much love to you!!!!
