Ear popping/glue ear?
« on: April 07, 2017, 03:31:05 PM »

Since a bothersome cold I have a continual 'popping' in my right ear.  It feels as though my ear drum is being used as a kettle drum and being tapped with drumsticks with  a regular rhythm.

Can adults get glue ear or is it just children?  I hope it is just the congestion from my cold but it is giving me considerable earache and affecting my hearing in that ear.  :(.

Hopefully Annie will reply as she has just had ear trouble. I'm on my phone so can't link her thread.

Yes i have been diagnosed with glue ear since both my ear drums burst beginning of January.  They've never been right since but I think the ENT man has kind of discharged me saying I'm ok.  I'm left with a vibrating sound and feeling in right ear, a degree of hearing loss especially lower tones and daily random pain plus I get a pressure in ears so I have to keep popping them only for them to build up pressure again.  The right one clicks too.

So far treatment has been steroid nasal drops.. allergy to ABs so they were stopped and I was given oral steroids. ENT specialist dug a lot of hardened gunk out but said jagged bits were stuck to ear drum and he couldn't do that bit. Nasal decongestant. Ear drops to soften the gunk from them bursting.  If by beginning of April symptoms are still there I have to ring them for another appointment.  They said to me at the beginning it can take 12 weeks to recover

Speak to your gp about a referral to ENT x

thank you Annie, very kind of you to comment  :thankyou:.

I did have a cold a couple of weeks ago so I won't go to the GP just yet as it could be an effect of all the congestion from my sinuses but I plan to get some ear drops and a decongestant this morning and I have a steroid nasal spray for rhinitis but I don't use it all the time as it can cause slight bleeding from my nose as it dries it out too much.

Just be mindful that it was an unknown sinus infection that caused my burst ear drums.  X

I find that Beconase dries my nose so I use it twice a week when necessary as well as Savlon in the nostrils.  My ears are buzzing loudly today  >:(

Have you been evaluated by ENT?
You most likely have eustacian tube disfunction, which can go or ease over time.
Make sure you get checked out, you may benefit from antibiotic ear drops, you can also help yourself by doing steam inhalations to try to clear and mucus which may be in the tubes.

Having suffered from ear troubles for the last ten years one easy thing that does help is chewing gum.
Maybe not what you would want to do but the chewing helps shift the gunk that has gathered in the tubes.
Also "auto venting" that's holding your nose and blowing like mad. It makes things pop. You can buy a little devise that is a thingy with a balloon on the end. You have to inflate the balloon with air from your nose. It also helps clear the obstruction.
Inhaling steam is also very helpful.

As oestrogen levels drop so muscles may become lax which means tubes become narrow  ::) - my ears feel bunged up, occasionally I can wriggle them which means for a few moments I can hear clearly - then they close up ........... bugga ........

Try holding your nose and blowing without puffing out your cheeks.
That helps clear your tubes and really helps.
As you say tubes probably narrow as we get older and sometimes need a bit of help.
