My chemist told me once that she still dispenses more premarin than estradiol. As dazned said, we have to remember this forum represents a very small proportion of the world's meno population.

;D Stellajane

Dana I don't think any of the progesterone derived progestogens are available transdermally and I presume it is to do with the molecular structure and stability? Not sure really - although I bet commercial considerations come into it as well.  I know that progesterone itself has to be micronised, and not produced as a normal tablet because it is unstable.

Yes I'm sure you're right. Let's hope things change as more women realise the benefits of hrt and it becomes more financially attractive to big pharma.

Many women who take equine estrogen either don't know or simply don't care how it is produced.

Personally I would NOT take "anything".

I wasn't happy taking Premarin as my Mum had DVT whilst taking it (and the Consultant who prescribed it knew this)! Also, I had awful dizziness on it which seems to be problematic and doesn't settle for some women according to many posts on this subject over at the Hystersisters forum.

It works very well for some women (upon my research, particularly those in surgically induced menopause) I think because it has androgenic effects too. A full break down of WHAT is exactly in Premarin can be found on the SurMeno blog.

I also found out that Wyeth have been very aggressive about blocking the release of 'generic Premarin ' in the past. So does this mean that they have now been unsuccessful and this new product is effectively generic Premarin (or Prempro which was their combined HRT)?

I am presently taking Duavive (Duavee in USA) - just started my second month!
If you look back at my posts you will see I have had somewhat of a nightmare journey after becoming allergic to Progesterone!
I started Menopause at 47 and am now 58 - the hot flushes/sweats have increased and become more severe with time (15 in a day).
I have tried every other option including Gabapentin at quite a high dose, which did reduce the flushes for a time, but then stopped working.
I did discover Duavee on the Internet and actually posted about it, but presumed it would be sometime before available.  However, when I approached my Consultant about it, he agreed I would be a prime candidate for it due to my severe allergy to Progesterone and agreed to look into obtaining it for me - this was then made easier due to it recently becoming available in the UK.
It obviously would not have been my preferred HRT, but I was so desperate for some relief from the debilitating hot flushes, which were getting worse rather than better!
It is early days, but already the flushes are reducing dramatically and also the severity of them, so I am grasping this HRT with both hands lol !!
At long last I feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Will keep you informed x

Glad you have found something that seems to work for you,as I said each one of us is different.  ;)

I personally couldn't get on with utrogeston after kicking up stink to get it because I thought it was the be all and end all ! Then found out it wasn't, for me anyway.   ::)

Here's hoping you continue to improve . :)

Tina1957, I've just read some of your older posts and you mentioned silent migraines - migraine aura consisting of visual disturbance but no headache and this is exactly what I get when using all types of synthetic progesterone (including the Mirena coil) and also Utrogestan in high doses.  You are the first person I have come across on this site who suffers from the same thing!

I didn't have silent migraines when using synthetic progesterone pre menopause, it was only when my own hormone levels dropped that they started.  Like you, I think I am allergic to synthetic progesterone because when I was on the pill in my 20s, I had a constant nasal drip and was tested for allergies but not progesterone so that might be what caused it - I have never had any problems with my own progesterone.  How did you find out that you are allergic to progesterone?

I hope the Duavive works for you, what exactly is it and is it completely free of progesterone?  Also, how much oestrogen does your tablet contain?

As far as I know it's not available in this country yet but only in US but correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe some of our friends across the pond have tried it?
