Hi

I'm just weighing up whether to start on Oestrogel/Utrogestan routine and just need some help/advice please.  I'm new to this group (introduced here by one of my friends who told me many ladies in the group use this regime).

First of all I would be asking my GP for this treatment (currently on Femoston) and not sure how easy it is to get on NHS - therein might lie a problem!  :-\

Also is the gel messy to use and does it take a long time to dry?  Is it usually applied on your arm?  Does it affect intimacy with your partner if used in evening or is it used in the morning?

Sorry for all the questions.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks a Lot

Hi Kazz,
I've been using this regime for about 18 month and i find it perfect.
You apply the gel to top of your thighs, I do it on an evening and it dries in about 5 minutes. I'm not sure why it would affect intimacy unless you mean inserting the utrogestan vaginally. I take mine orally so can't answer that one.
I think doctors are becoming more aware of this regime. You could print the info from this site to take with you. I found that because i had done my research the GP was happy to prescribe.

Hi KAZZ65

 :welcomemm:

In terms of intimacy - it is important to avoid any skin to skin contact with partner or children for at least an hour following application of gel as some of the hormone can be transferred through the skin - so if you apply in the evening to your inner thighs and are then intimate or cuddly with partner - not such a good idea!

I use testosterone gel - which only needs a small blob but I still have to wait for it to dry - and I apply mine in the morning. However I only work very part-time so in less of a hurry - so this could be an issue.

The instriction for estrogel say to apply anywhere on outer shoulder or below waist. All the other oestrogen types ie patches and including Sandrena gel say to apply below the waist - so as to be as far from breasts as possible I presume.

Hi Jedigirl and Hurdity

Thanks for the help and advice.  I've had IT issues here!  Our trusty old computer blew up! Only just got round to replacing it.  Sorry for delay in replying ::)

My main concern really was if the Utrogestan was taken internally, was it better to do this in the morning rather than evening as may affect my better half if we get intimate if you understand what I mean!  This was also a concern regarding the Oestrogel.  I would probably tend to use that first thing in the morning so hopefully that would solve that part.

Does Utrogestan still cause excessive tiredness when taking internally?  Just trying to figure out what to do for best here.  On Femoston at the moment but I'm very concerned about stroke risk of taking tablets.

Thanks Again Ladies and sorry for all the questions.

Theoretically there should be fewer side effects with utrogestan when taken vaginally because it doesn't have to be digested nor go through the liver nor be churning round the blood stream with all its metabolic by-products. The French Product info leaflet gives vaginal use as an alternative to oral use when side effects such as excessive tiredness, nausea, dizziness etc are experienced. However I have also read papers showing that the systemic levels are actually higher when the same dose is used vaginally - for the same reason ( ie less lost to digestion).

I am generally pretty tired quite a lot of the time these days anyway especially in the mornings so hard to say - I usually get progressively more tired in the mornings and foggy headed towards the end of  my course but I am taking 200 mg so I am on a long cycle. I have never taken it orally nor taken 100 mg for any length of time.

I couldn't take the utro in the mornings - I've had 4 children and it would fall straight out. If you haven't had children then maybe would be OK but I would still prefer gravity not to be acting on it so it would ooze up cervix to uterus more easily ( stands to reason really). As for intimacy - probably best to insert (Utro) afterwards - so it's a question of knowing when it's going to happen! Not so easy......even so I would worry a bit about dilution but so far it hasn't been a problem for me - for a variety of reasons I won't go into  ::)

I heard that too Hurdity that the systematic doseage levels are higher when Utrogestan taken vaginally rather than orally.  I think some women prefer to take 100mg rather than the 200mg for this reason.  I would prefer to stick to the 2 x 100mg sequi regime though - think it's something like 12 days a month.  I've never had children so might be able to get away with using it vaginally in the mornings (trial and error I guess!!)

I've been on Femoston 2/10 for just over a year and been ok on it but just something a friend said made me worry about stroke risk.  She seemed to think it was very high on tablets.  There is so much conflicting info.  Just trying to weigh up all my options at the moment.  Not even sure if I'd be able to get Oestrogel and Utro on NHS.  Haven't spoke to my older male GP about it yet.

Thanks Again Hurdity x
Take Care and Merry Christmas  :)

You haven't said how old you are KAZZ65? The stroke risk is more of an issue for older women and those whose menopause was some years ago - due to changes in the cardio-vascular system and cholesterol, with age.

Have a look at what it says here about stroke risk and HRT (scroll down to cardio-vascular disease):

http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/risks.php

If you are still under 60 then I wouldn't worry about taking Femoston - and many women over 60 continue to take tablet HRT. It is just not advisable to start tablet HRT when you are older (I have simplified this!).

There is also some info on balancing risks and benefits - so under 60 the benefits usually outweigh the risks if you are getting symptoms.
