Fluctuating hormone levels?
« on: November 01, 2016, 11:51:18 AM »

About a month ago my GP agreed I could up my hrt dose from a 50mg patch to a 75mg. This was to see if the increased estrogen helped with my increasing joint aches. Unfortunately FemSeven Conti is not manufactured in 75 mg so I used a patch and a half. I suffered hot flushes and had a red face so I dropped back down to one and a quarter patches and now I am back down to my original 50mg. However, I am experiencing feelings of slight nausea in the morning and later in the day, along with sensations of being too warm at times. Before I upped my dose I wasn't experiencing any flushes.
So now I am wondering are fluctuating hormone levels causing this and do I stick it out at this dose awhile longer (see if my body adjusts) or do I go back up to a patch and a quarter? ( approx 62mg)
Have any other ladies experienced this?
I almost forgot to say that after upping my dose and then starting to stop back down I had a bleed of old endometrial blood for about 5 days.

Oo-er that's tricky to answer as you've changed doses about a bit! You would really need to give each dose a decent amount of time before deciding it wasn't for you and chopping and changing can mess up your hormone stability and perhaps this is what caused your flushes and other symptoms?

The problem with conti patches is that you can't increase oestrogen without also increasing progestogen so you don't know if it's the increased progestogen causing the side effects. This is why many women on higher oestrogen doses than the standard medium dose of 50 mcg, tend to take separate oestrogen and progestogens - enabling a bit of closer tweaking of each independently, although the choices of progestogen if you do this is limited to 2, or three if you count the Mirena (same prog as Femseven).

If you had a bleed this is likely to be due to reduction in progestogen and implies there was some lining to shed, although some women also experience oestrogen withdrawal bleeding - but if this was the case it also implies the lining has thickened a little.

Sorry I can't be of more help - the main thing is to find a dose at which your symptoms are improved - so as I said you need to give a higher oestrogen dose long enough to assess the affect on your joint aches.

Thank you Hurdity, I have complicated matters somewhat and I must admit I never thought about the increased progesterone causing the bleed. Hmmm, yes I need to stabilise a bit now before changing again. If my lining had built up so much, then the Levenorgestrel in the patch at 50mgught not be enough to keep my endometrium thin enough. It measured 6.5 at my scan in June  . :-\
