Coming off the pill
« on: October 24, 2016, 11:52:18 AM »

I was told a couple of weeks ago that I had started the menopause. I had to stop taking the mini pill because that could've made the change start early.. I'm 43. Since stopping taking it, my abdomen is tender and my weightloss has stopped- I've been dieting and lost 3.5 stone this year. Now I'm wondering how long this will last.. will I have a period, or will the tenderness and difficulty to lose weight be an ongoing problem?? Not happy right now!!

Hi and welcome to MM lou1973
If you have stopped the mini pill, are post menopausal and not producing enough oestrogen yourself naturally, then you are unlikely to have a period.  However if you are peri menopausal then your hormone levels will fluctuate and you may still get occasional periods.  Without regular blood tests over a few weeks it is difficult to know whether your periods will return or not.  It is quite staggering that so few women know what to expect when menopause hits - sadly it is still a very taboo subject.  You have come to the right place to get clued up so browse around.
If you have been told you are menopausal, what advice have you been given about replacing the oestrogen you still need. At 43 you are far too young to be oestrogen deficient so HRT would be advisable.  You have clearly made great strides to loose weight - is this an ongoing problem and do you need to loose more weight?  It is normal for body shape to change with the menopause and loosing weight can be more challenging - we all have to permanently eat a lot less to keep weight under control as meno hits.  HRT can help to maintain muscle etc. so can encourage more exercise and stamina which is so important in weight control.
REad up everything on this site to get clued up and get back to your GP to discuss your options.  DG xxx

Hi lou1973

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Just to add a question - what reason have you been told you are starting the menopause - was it symptoms such as flushes and sweats or have you had blood tests?

As Dancinggirl says - if you have reached menopause ( which you won't know for 12 months) then you are having an early menopause. You should not want to wait this long to find out anyway - as she says - you are too young to be without oestrogen long term.
