Hi, getting_old! Now, let's see if we can get you hooked on sock knitting too! Penny-farthing has linked to a fantastic pattern there!

Can I suggest also going along to the Winwick Mum Sock Knitalong Facebook group? They are a FABULOUS crowd over there, and the creator Christine has written a very detailed and easy pattern for complete beginners, and you can get loads of support and ask questions in the group. Everyone shares their successes with photos (and failures too - no one is judging)!
Yes, sock wool is better because it has nylon content, which helps the socks to retain their shape and wear much better. You can get some real bargains on eBay - it doesn't have to be the fancy stuff to begin with. Just do an eBay search under 'sock yarns' or visit your local knitting shop. Most carry them these days.
Have you ever tried double pointed needles before? If not, don't be afraid! Once you get the knack, it feels like alchemy and everyone who sees you knitting thinks it's so clever! Christine in the Winwick Mum Facebook Group also includes information in her pattern on how to buy and use a special tiny circular needle to use instead, which is much easier.
We'll get you knitting socks in no time, and like penny-farthing says, its very addictive (I also like it because it's a very portable project that you can take anywhere, and because knitting with bigger chunkier yarn actually makes my hot flushes worse. Who knew)
