They are a FABULOUS crowd over there, and the creator Christine has written a very detailed and easy pattern for complete beginners, and you can get loads of support and ask questions in the group. Everyone shares their successes with photos (and failures too - no one is judging)!
Yes, sock wool is better because it has nylon content, which helps the socks to retain their shape and wear much better. You can get some real bargains on eBay - it doesn't have to be the fancy stuff to begin with. Just do an eBay search under 'sock yarns' or visit your local knitting shop. Most carry them these days.
