Vitamin D
« on: August 17, 2016, 07:35:10 PM »

Hello Ladies,

My GP prescribed me 3 months supply of Vitamin D after a blood test showed I was low in it. She didn't say what to do after 3 months and I'm nearly finished the course. I do feel better. Certainly less tired and my joint aches have improved but I wondered if I'm to assume that I only needed 3 months course and so I don't need to return to the GP for another blood test as she never mentioned anything about that?

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Megamind, I too have just finished a high dose course of Vit D but I have to go back now to make sure levels are back up and then have to take something called Adcal, which is a daily tablet of Vit d and calcium.

Welcome by the way!  :welcomemm:

Thanks Justjules. I have been reading the forum ever since my Dr confirmed I was in peri and I have seen posts about Vitamin D but she never told me how low mine was and I only take 1 800 IU capsule a day whereas I have seen other people take more than that so I'm wondering if it wasn't that bad to start and I do feel better. In fact, on holiday, I didn't take it for a week (as it was sunny!) and I didn't notice much difference.

I only have just over a week supply left. I did look on Amazon to see if I could buy the same tablets there as I had to pay prescription price for these ones but they don't do the exact same ones but I presume any Vitamin D 800 IU should suffice?

Ladies I'm sure I've read that with vit d supplements it's advised to also take k2 so that it gets to the right places, sorry I can't elaborate as I can't remember what I read but something about it calcifying in the wrong place X

I'm not familiar with k2, is it a supplement?
Where did you buy your own from Sparkle and what make? Thanks.
I must admit I was hoping I wouldn't need another blood test as the last one left me with an unsightly purple bruise for a week!

Well I was on 40,000 iu a week for 12 weeks - one tablet twice a week but I still don't feel any different to be honest.  Was expecting some miraculous recovery but it didn't happen but my levels were very, very low apparently.  My GP, who has now left unfortunately, said I would need the levels checking again after the treatment and then a long term supplement but the new GP said I didn't need it checking and just take a supplement if I felt I wanted to!  I actually bought K2 tablets but didn't take them....as I felt like I was taking enough with other stuff I take which was silly really.

According to my doctor my vit d levels were undetectable. She looked the book and I am on mega vit d twice a week for seven weeks, then have to go back for a blood test to check calcium levels and then go on to regular vit d (at a level I can't remember).

Not silly at all JJ - you have to be careful with Vitamin K because it thins the blood so if you're on any medication such as warfarin it's contraindicated.

What I don't understand is that if one GP prescribes something and says you need to be checked again once you've finished the course, how on earth can another GP then say you don't need to be checked - it just beggars belief!

Precisely my thoughts Sparkle! She has given me a prescription for Calcichews....I found it with some paperwork she gave me for CBT (again...) x

I can't take calcium supplements.  When I was given them I ended up in hospital with hypercalcaemia.  I was put on vit D at the beginning of the year by my endocrinologist who looks after my thyroid.  I couldn't tolerate the levels he gave me so I reduced the amount myself and will see what the outcome is when I see him in 3 weeks time.

The benefit of being under one consultant is that it removes the inconsistency you get with different GPs.  Mind you I always see the same one for that reason.

Why is that BJ? We're your levels already high? Why don't they check these things before they prescribe something!!? I had a 20 year relationship with my old GP but she's left now and I'm trying one of the new GP's in the practice. She's a partner and has a psychiatric background so I thought she would be useful!  :)

Goodness Justjules that's a strong dose. I'm surpised you don't feel better. When I started them, I was feeling very tired and I had a lot of aching in one of my knees and my wrists and elbows often hurt but the aching has nearly gone now and I do feel less tired so I imagine I wasn't that low and maybe that's why she didn't tell me to return after 3 months? I've decided I will just ring the practice nurse next week and ask if I can stop taking them now. Also, we've been getting a lot more sun of late. I think most people must become low over winter.
