Author Topic: Dip in blood sugar or anxiety or hormone fluctuations or all three together?  (Read 7986 times)

Hi all....

Never ends does it! More weird stuff happening again.

On one hand I've been better about a few things with the help of the supplements and coped a lot better with a few situations. However, a few times over the last couple of weeks I've had:

Sudden feeling of light head, that feeling when your stomach sinks and bit of nausea, feeling a bit weird, also feeling want to go to the loo, this then leads to some anxiety and breath feels shallow, even a bit of shakiness. It does pass but can take a while partly because then I start worrying about it, especially at the moment.

Not necessarily happening when I may need food but just had one now and it's couple of hours after dinner.

Trying to work out what it is, is it a dip in blood sugar and because I feel weird starts the anxiety or is it anxiety which trips it even though I may not be even thinking of anything at the time, happened in a meeting the other day, absorbed in it so no reason to feel anxious, although around 3-4 hours after brekki. Or I'm wondering if it's some sort of hormone dip like a flush without getting hot?

I did go through a spell of something similar a few years ago when the hot flushes started to get bad and then I went on to hrt.

Because of the gallbladder removal I do try to eat regularly as all the medics have advised and I keep well hydrated, in fact probably too much as if I have to go without liquids for a time I do notice it.

It's funny how you can be feeling totally fine one minute and then totally weird the next!

If I could work out what it's likely to be then I feel I could handle it better as the light head completely throws me. I've had it a little off an on for some years but now with the other bits makes you feel quite off.

I know so much has happened this last year and have a big couple of weeks coming up but I'm trying to take each day as it comes, not thinking too far ahead. It's also interesting that when I'm feeling ok I'm quite positive but as soon as this weirdness starts I just want to cancel everything and climb down a rabbit hole!

Any ideas which might be happening first to kick it off? I'm hoping once life gets back to normal then things will settle otherwise might I need to up my dose as I'm on the lowest patch or try a different regime.

Thanks for reading my ramble!

Wombat - this is the exact feeling I get just before a hot sweat starts. I used to get it about six months before I began to get hot sweats proper and couldn't work out what it was. Not sure if you are on HRT or if you are getting flushes/sweats.

It's awful ain't it.  That's 'normal' for me for years, I knew where every waste bin and loo was when shopping  :sigh:

Maybe eat little and often?  I use Dextrose tablets when it happens as well as carrying dried fruits and nuts to munch B4 I feel hungry!  Not always easy to remember though.

Mine seems to be hormone related, but it's always worse if I'm tired or hungry.  Also worse if I'm out, as I then start panicking about 'what if I collapse/can't drive home/look stupid in public?'  So I think it is a mix of all 3.  Try to eat little and often to keep the blood sugar level, and try not to worry when it happens.  Also, see if you can 'listen out' to what your body is doing beforehand.  I've worked out that I get a weird buzzy feeling all over and a funny tingly ache in my arms and legs just before it happens.  If I can sit down somewhere quiet and cool and eat something as soon as that starts, I can often stop it developing or it's not so bad when it comes.  I never go anywhere without some nuts/seeds/dried fruit and a bottle of water now.

Yes I get similar feelings, almost feel faint and light headed and then the hot flush starts. Can feel very ill for a minute or so before but then the heat comes and I know what it is.  Before the actual hot flush I used to get it and had no idea what it was.  I also agree on the needing loo bit ::)

If you are wanting to check your blood glucose level at home you can buy cheap glucose moniters at chemist which have about 10 test strips in them some are as cheap as £5-10 or else do you know any diabetics who could test you when you feel like this.

My husband is insulin dependant so thankfully I could just test myself with his kit and it was def not my blood sugar although the symptoms are very similar.

The suggestion about getting yourself a cheap blood glucose meter is a good one. It's not a great idea to just assume it's low blood sugar then dose yourself with dextrose or other carby foods. There's a condition known as reactive hypoglyaecemia where you have wild swings in blood sugar due to overreacting to carbs and you'll be very high one minute then plummet dramatically to low blood sugar levels. I'm a diabetic and you can feel like you are experiencing low bs levels when you are actually still quite high - if you've been very high, even dropping to a normal level miles away from hypoglycaemia can give you the same feelings you'd get if you were low. Things like tingling, irregular heartbeats etc are as much as sign of high bs as low so it is worth getting checked out. A simple blood test known as the hba1c gives you a snapshot of your bs over last three months and is used as a diagnostic tool for diabetes.

 :thankyou:

I keep meaning to pop into Lloyds chemist for a blood test to check if I am borderline …….. I only seem to remember when I've eaten that bun though  ::)

Hi ladies

Thanks for all your replies and it's good to know it's not just me!

I am wondering if some of this is like a bad hot flush without the hot...maybe my HRT is just holding some of it back. I remember some of you saying in other threads feeling ill/weird before one.

I would have though by now things would have sorted themselves out, it's been 4ish years since I had that out of the blue period! Admittedly they did do a d&c after investigations so I don't know if I would have had any more. The only thing I can think is all the last year has taken its toll, the weight loss and recent anxiety has plunged the hormones down even lower. I've had very sore gums and dry eyes the last week so could be a sign.

My doc was happy to up my HRT dose but it means doubling it....has any one stuck two patches on just to test, is that feasible?

I do carry emergency food and drink around, always have done!

Thanks for the tip about glucose testing, might be an idea and interesting what you said about similar feelings as a reaction to carbs.

Great you posted that coldethyl!

I am one who gets the reactive hypoglycaemia but only now and again. I did get a blood sugar monitor from GP and tested it a couple of times but it wasn't low - only something like 4.4 which isn't in the hypo range. I would go from just feeling hungry to the hypo symptoms within a very short space of time.

Anyone who has experienced these hypo symptoms - they are unmistakeable and cannot be mistaken for anything else. There is no halfway point - it just happens really suddenly and you literally have to eat sugar fast - you are physically trembling - hands shaking, pouring with sweat (I mean dripping), very weak - you have to sit down until blood sugar rises again. When it happens I have to try to stop stuffing myself with food for 10 mins because the feeling does not go away immediately but a small amount is enough to stop it eventually! The tingling throughout my body lasts for about 20 mins.

Controlling blood sugar levels through regulating carb intake is the way forward especially during peri-menopause. There is some interaction with sex hormones and blood sugar regulation especially re progesterone and oestrogen. I think blood sugar levels are higher when progesterone is high and when it falls insulin levels sometimes take a while to react so continue to take sugar out of the blood-stream - hence the low blood sugar. When I was peri-menopausal I used to get it badly just before my period. Also when I took norethisterone and then stopped. Now sometimes randomly.

It usually comes on during/after exercise ( of course because more energy is needed and blood sugar falls).

The answer is as coldethyl says - not to carry dextrose ( unless you frequently get the reactive kind) but eat moire protein and more complex carbs - cutting down on sugar, refined carbs and all carbs.

CLKD - banish that dextrose! Yes to nuts - they are slow release!

Wombat - what is your diet like? Can't remember what HRT you are on either? Have you had a thyroid function test?

Hi Hurdity

My oh has had that a couple of times both related to postponing food and a migraine but probably not hormonal!

I'm on conti-HRT, my diet is good due to the gallbladder saga. Still probably a little low in fat but I'm certainly not eating as much sugar as I used to. I won't eat cake by myself if I'm out but will have a tiny bit if he has something. If I have a small piece of choc it's the good plain stuff and I even turn down desserts now!

Every thyroid test I've had done has been ok but I know it's a fine line. I had bloods to check iron etc recently, no one had contacted me so assume they were ok.

I have lost nearly another kilo this week, wonder if that has anything to do with it.

However, have had a good day today (touch wood, hug a whole forest!) and it was lovely. I had to get up early this morning but made sure I had something 3-4 hours afterwards and to eat regularly. Been out and bought a whole stack of stuff whilst I'm working away this week so I'm not a slave to conference food and set food times. Not sure what the room cleaner might think if they look in the wardrobe!

Hi Sparkle

Do you take some nibbles out with you? I always have emergency nibbles with me. Maybe you could tie them to the dog like the rescue St Bernard's!

Hi Tropical

Sometimes my limbs feel weak and sometimes not always when hungry, maybe an hour or so after eating but then it's evening as hormones can fluctuate with night fall, bit like a cough always gets worse at night!
