I use powder - a small amount as our clothes aren't dirty.  Occasionally a softener and 'calgon' alternate loads.

Apparently, if we use liquid detergent ALL the time in our washing machines, we can get a build up of scum in the drum, and that makes our clothes smell!
A repair man told me that years ago, so, now, I use both, sometimes powder, sometimes liquid, just to stop that happening.
Also, we should do a machine clean every month.!
I use bleach, or bleach tablets to do that.
But I also pop a bleach tablet in when I wash my white towels, keeps them really white, and cleans the machine too.

I use liquid detergent always and my last machine lasted over 10 years, before it died.

No need for any special cleaning products. Just do a boil wash with no laundry, if it gets smelly.  I also never use the soap drawer and put everything in the drum. I don't use fabric softener either.

Years ago we were fed the crap that we could keep clothing clean at 30 degrees.  WRONG! the laundry needs a long cycle to get the powder out of the fabrics and hot helps to keep the gubbins working  ;).  I went back to higher washes appropriately.

I can't use fabric conditioner it gives me a headache when I smell it in the clothes, even when it isn't really strong  ??? I have had to re wash some clothes just to get rid of the smell  :(

I find colour catcher sheets brilliant, although I cut them in half before I use them  ::) who says I'm mean  ;D

I've been in B&M today (not sure if I should have said that) and they had Lenor tumble dryer sheets.
I bought a box for old times sake.

Only use our dryer in an emergency.  So that's about twice a year.
