This week I have been taking a low dose dispersible aspirin to help prevent blood clots after a general anaesthetic and with a long car journey looming. Anyway, I started to wonder if it was OK to take alongside hrt so I did  a Google search and found some sites where women were saying their doctors actually encouraged the taking of a pill a day, alongside hrt, to  help with stroke prevention etc. I was wondering whether any of you ladies on here follow that regime. I will go clear it with my doctor first if I do feel I would like to make this part of my daily routine.

It would make sense if someone were more prone to clots I suppose. I have a large varicose vein in one leg and problems with a vein in my other so really I probably shouldn't take hrt. However it's about quality of life so for now I'm sticking with it. I think I will go have a discussion with my GP once I'm back from my holiday, but it does make you wonder why it isnt suggested initially.

Only problem with aspirin is the possibility of developing stomach ulcers and as we age this is more likely. I think in the short term taking a slow release low dose aspirin is OK but i wouldn't be happy thing them all the time. Many people who have to take aspirin all the time have to have a PPI alongside and these drugs can bring side effects - there has been a thread about this on MM recently.  DG x

Yes, I have to admit it's the stomach issues that concern me regarding the aspirin. Maybe I should just take them this week and then leave off again..... And I should stop being too analytical!

Hi

The aspirin for daily use normally has a special coating so it doesn't give the stomach problems. Plus it's a lower dose than for pain killing so hopefully you'd be ok.

You need to speak with your GP!  Aspirin can cause the gut to bleed

Varicose veins are not considered a risk factor when on HRT linz57. However, I had to come off  HRT before I had mine treated a while ago in order to prevent blood clots following surgery. I wouldn't self-dose with aspirin to be honest. Have you had your op and are using aspirin to prevent clots? You should have been given an injection which is much more effective than aspirin if so. If you have not yet had your op then most surgeons request that you stop any aspirin therapy before surgery as you can bleed profusely during the operation. Sorry this is a bit garbled!

Hi Taz2, yes I have had my procedure, a hysteroscopy, along with biopsies, an ablation and d and c but no one would listen when I said I usually have an injection in the stomach before surgery / procedures under a GA. It was only in the anaesthetising room just before surgery that the anaesthetist commented that I should have had the injection. I'm taking a few aspirin as I'm off on a long car journey this Saturday and wanted to minimise any risk.
Ah, so veins aren't contraindicated with hrt ? That's good to know.
