past it!

Hi, I was a Newbie some time ago and have come back in earnest! My history (very quick!) I was on HRT at 51 as my menopause/peri-meno symptons were so bad, then came off it at 55. I had very, very bad sweats, hot-flushes, dryness, bad-temper and mood swings but with the help of a lovely retired lady GP, I persevered and now 18 months later I havn't had any hot-flushes for 4 days - it is absolute heaven (if only I could make love to my wonderful husband again................. :'( ) Anyway, I have had very sore, lumpy boobs for the last week - it feels like they are full of milk as they were when I breastfed my babies 30 and 32 years ago - is this normal? I also had a strange/sweet smell which used to happen with my PMT since I was about 30.
Looking forward to learning more about my middle-aged body! Oh, another thing - my hair is like straw and for the first time in my life, the skin on my forehead and eyelids is flaky and dry (which I'm happy about as my skin has always been oily!)

Be back soon

Do you mean you are no longer on HRT? Those symptoms do sound like hormonal activity but if you haven't had a period for 18 months then this is less likely. If you're not taking HRT then perhpas have a word with the doc as any changes in the breasts should be investigated if there isn't an obvious explanation. Of course you could be having a late hormonal surge but best to check it out.

re the dry hair and skin - this can also be caused by low thyroid hormones as well as oestrogen deficiency. Do you have any other symptoms eg weight gain, feeling cold, constipation etc? Perhpas have a word with doc about this too when you visit ie have a good overhaul :)

Hi Poppi,

I'm still very much a newbie to HRT and have been peri for a bout 5 years. Although I have yet to reach your stage of hormonal enlightenment and cant identify with the sweet smell of pmt (although as changes in scent play a huge part in indicating that animals are about to "cycle" I cant see why they wouldnt be present in people) but the dry skin on my eyelids and below my eye brows and the super sore boobs I have!

I suppose this new HRT free hormonal stage will probably take time to settle.....? Although it sounds as if you are over the worst. Perhaps you will continue to have a kind of "ghost cycle" for a while? With a pattern of lower level hormone changes for some time to come?

I have has the mega sore boobs for a couple of years now on and off but the dry skin round the eyes is a new symptom for me. Until I read your post it hadn't occurred to me that it was yet another peri symptom (Doh!) I was just concerned because I was promising myself a facial and didn't want the treatments to aggravate it ;)

Yes, I no longer take HRT (stopped about 18 months ago and straight into horrendous hot flushes) and the "ghost" symptons sound like what I am experiencing now, but no more hot flushes is so pleasant  8) ! That's interesting about thyroid as I have gained weight (been eating more chocolate so not surprised) and have cold extremeties (my nose too - my hands and feet are usually cold and only warm in a hot climate and in bed) If things don't settle down I will go to see my GP.

If you're experiencing pmt symptoms, then maybe your ovaries are having a mini late surge of activity?
