Technical query regarding CD, DVDs, tapes
« on: February 08, 2015, 05:30:18 PM »

If I buy a pre-recorded music tape I know what to expect.  If I buy a pre-recorded music CD I know what to expect.  However: DH was given a double package, 1 music CD, 1 music DVD - but the DVD only has 10 mins of actual 'footage' to watch  :-\: the rest is listening rather than watching ……….  >:(

What do you expect a DVD to show?

I've never had a DVD which is mostly listening CLKD. Seems wrong to me. What was it of?

Guess they can put what they like on them, but most I've bought DVD is longer than 10 minutes of viewing.

I expected to see the group playing rather than it being only music playing  ::)

Ah if it's a music DVD then you often get a lot of chat about past history etc - especially if it's one of the "oldies". Which band is it?

Pink Floyd  >:( - mostly music so I am disappointed!

It is their latest recorded in the studio, 2014 - 'endless river' - can't see the point in having a CD and a DVD the 'same'.

Once bought a DVD off a dodgy seller that turned out to be a CD-ROM with a label stuck over the CD marking so wasn't a film at all!
But not yours. Suppose you can't send it back as it was a gift? How disappointing.

I am disappointed but DH can justify why there isn't much actual footage - it is his so I have to get over it  ::) -

As an aside - do any of you have a tape player ……… I need 1 to use in the camper as I have 100s of pre-recorded tapes that I would like to listen to.  I've looked for an in-car tape player but that's too much phaff to fit even if I could find one  ::)

The trouble is the definition (and reason for use) of a DVD - DVD stands for 'digital versatile disc' and leapt to our attention when publishers started using them for films.  Their high storage capacity and cheap production costs makes them ideal for 'video' content.  But, a DVD can be used to store any form of digital information - video, music, computer programs and files, etc.

So, your husband got a package containing what the publishers (correctly) described as a CD and a DVD - what is effectively is, is a double album ... one disc of the album is the CD (it only needs to be a CD as it contains only music files) and the second disc is a DVD, containing music and video.  It's also possible there are MP3 versions of the music on the DVD too, allowing easy transfer to personal MPS players.

I managed to find a cassette, CD/radio combi in Argos last year, but I think it was an end of line.  There are quite a lot available online though - I've just done a quick search on the Octopus-like website which sells everything and they have loads ranging from portables to music centres with tape decks.
