Confused over my new prescription - advice needed please
« on: March 08, 2016, 12:27:16 PM »

Hello
I have seen my GP and obtained a new prescription for HRT.  I am over the moon that I have finally got some oestrogel. But I'm confused with the next bit.

It states Norethisterone 350 microgram tablets one tablet on day 1-14 of each cycle.
Oestrogel 1.5 mg once daily continuously.

Now I know I am no expert but shouldn't I take the progesterone part of the 2nd half of my cycle?

To complicate matters, I was expecting my period last week on day 28 but now it's day 34 and still nothing.  I feel a bit down so am hoping it's coming soon.  Without giving TMI, I'm sure that I ovulated so am confused where it is? Is this all parts of the delights of Peri?

Desperate to start my HRT so praying that my period hurries up.

Having headaches, hot sweats, confusion, nasal drip, digestion problems and mood swings...

Any lovely ladies able to offer some advice please?

Hi Mis71Mum

No idea why this would be. If you are post-meno then it is academic what day is what as long as you take the right number of days of progestogen per cycle. If you are still peri then usually the idea is to tie in the progestogen with your own cycle. The doc's reasoning could be to prevent the big fluctuations in progesterone but in actuality this means that you could be having progesterone of some sort for most of the month - the first 14 days (from the norethisterone) and then during the normal second half of your cycle when it is produced after ovulation. This could give rise to unwanted side effects!

I am puzzled too!

Have you taken norethisterone before? Personally I would count the start of your bleed as day 1 and then start the norethisterone on Day 17 or 18 and then take for the usual 12 days. However I suggest you take it up with your doc and ask for his/her reasoning saying that most HRT the progestogen is 2nd half of cycle so should you do the same?

You might get a few days of pms after stopping the norethisterone as it leaves your system but you should then feel good again on the oestrogen only :)

Also if your own cycles are irregular ( due to peri) this may not completely control your cycle so you could get bleeding now and again at the "wrong" time as your hormones break through.

I'm inclined to go back and tell her that I want the Utrogestan instead as I know the Northeristerone isn't the best progesterone.

Can't help feeling that I'm not getting the best advice from my GP.

I know that I'm suffering from anxiety at the moment, and am hoping that the HRT will assist before I increase my dose of AD.

Feel like going private at this rate😡

You're in the same boat as me. Hope you get some answers soon.

I was given 5mg of norethisterone to take twice a day on day 17-28. Only managed 2 days and I had to stop I felt so ill. Posters on here have told me that's way too high a dosage and when I've googled they're right.

I'm hoping to get the Utrogestan like you. Like you i suffer with anxiety. I have it so bad I'm agoraphobic. When I started the oestrogen patches, evorel 50, I felt the anxiety reduce so I hope you get that benefit too.

If I don't get any joy I'll be going private too.

Good luck and let me know how you get on x

Hi Lisa 789

It's totally rubbish when you put your faith in the medical profession and they let you down. It's so frustrating.

I'm sure my anxiety is hormone related, and it's good you found some relief with the patches. I also take AD's to help overcome the anxiety but really want to see if HRT will help me.

For me, I can't stay in the house because I find that my mind wanders, so am back at work now after being off sick for a few months. I feel like I've got my life back, just want my mind back instead of it thinking negatively and ruminating. Anxiety is just the pits!

I'm going to call my GP and ask for a chat.

Let me know how you get on too - Good Luck.

Just wondering whether to take my prescription to the pharmacy and get the gel, then re-book to see my GP for the micronised progesterone. I do feel like I'm taking up valuable GP time but what else can I do?

Just waiting impatiently for my period so I can start the gel, very excited that I've finally decided to take the plunge. Looking forward not to being so hot all the time too!

Hi Mis71Mum - you're not taking up valuable time if you didn't get the prescription you asked for? It sounds like a good plan (getting the gel first) - just say to doc that you don't want to take synthetic progestogens - and they shouldn't argue with that. OK sometimes one has to, to treat a thickened lining or sort out heavy bleeding but in your position - you should be able to start with your chosen product.

Hello

Had a weird day! Gone from thinking that today is a whole new start and that the peri menopause is going to be a good thing....to thinking that I am going to leave my husband and kids and live in a caravan in Scotland! Then went on search for some cake to make me feel better!  My husband pointed out that it seemed like I had PMT, not a wise move, then I thought he could be right,

Anyway now on Day 37 of my cycle and still no period. Feeling pretty fed up as I have my oestrogel and desperate to give it a whirl. What would happen if I started it tomorrow as I have no idea when my period might come.

I feel like I'm at the going mad stage here, I keep wondering whether I am imagining all these things or whether they are really happening.  But I can't imagine the lack of period or the hot flushes and my husband can't deny the mood swings either.  I wouldn't mind a bit of energy either!

I have my first reflexology appointment tomorrow, really hoping that will help to calm my busy mind too.
