It was an OK gift. I had to wait until after my birthday before it was given to me and I liked it until: 'it was too heavy to post' ………. if they cared the thought wouldn't have crossed my B in L's mind and if they were bothered about the cost of postage, surely they would have bought something that was light enough to post, so that it arrived on time for my birthday. DH's comment was just that, 'why not buy something lighter then?'
It is their way of keeping control ……… they used to tell us that by waiting until C.mas Day before giving me my gift, gave them 4 extra days to buy something

- but I have a birthday like everyone else, every 12 months and it doesn't suddenly arrive

. So the recent excuse is the weight of posting an item so that I get it in time for the event. Which if one cares about someone the cost doesn't enter into the equation!
Over the years: 40+ : they have rarely chosen something suitable to give me. When they know my hobbies and when over the years I have made suggestions >shrug< ……….. it got beyond 'it's the thought that counts' as it became obvious that very little thought went into their choices. At least the birthday card was lovely ……….
During the 4-5 years I was unable to socialise, 1 birthday they bought me a handbag when they knew I couldn't go shopping ……….. the year after my dog died they gave me floppy slippers like puppies: "because they look like *******" : ……….. and expected me to wear them over C.mas ………… they went to Charity ASAP.
A book on cats when they know that I can no longer have pets due to anxiety …………. "Because you must miss yours" ………
DH and I tend to buy presents throughout the year ……….. suitable for the person it is chosen 4
