Symbicort for asthma
« on: November 30, 2015, 04:01:39 PM »

hi has anybody tried this? I have been through numerous tests lately via a consultant at the hospital as I was bringing up blood, this now seems to have stopped, the tests included three chest x rays, ct scan, bronchoscopy, peak flow,  the only thing that was found was slight scarring on my lungs which the consultant was not concerned about, the shadow that was appearing on my clavicle on the x rays showed up to be nothing on the c t scan.

So coming to my point, I left the consultant telling me to keep up my preventative inhaler pulmacort and Ventolin reliever if needed.

When I went to order more from my gp I was asked to come in to asthma clinic as they had not seen me since 2013, they tried the peak flow and found this to be low (not sure of reading) and have now put me on symbicort 100 morning and night for a few weeks to try and bring this up, also have two more Ventolin inhalers, I have only taken one dose of symbicort (meant to be one to two puffs night and morning), but it gave me palpatations throughout the night, I rang the doctor who said this is a very uncommon side effect and to keep it up for now, because I have suffered with papatations in the past and anxiety I don't really want to carry  on with  it, just wondered if anybody has had side effects and if they will go? x

Is that the red one karenja? I've had it, but had to stop as it has lactose in it & I'm lactose intolerant. Can't remember getting palpitations, but I believe that can happen with ventolin too. Inhalers have never caused those effects with me.  As I remember you don't use ventolin with it as symbicort is a combined inhaler.

Yes, it's a combined one robotwars. I was told it was mixture of brown, green & blue.

Not trying to teach you how to suck eggs, but are you blowing out as hard and fast as you can? I was told it's best done standing so you can inhale as much as possible before blowing out. When I had pneumonia mine was about 300/320 at most. Now it's about 420 which is higher than most my age. It depends on state of your  lungs at the time.

Found this, maybe help you see what's normal.

Karen.  My mum was put on this for some type of pulmonary condition ( they're still not sure what the diagnosis is) but she's had it for years.  It caused seriously terrible palpitations to the point she was almost passing out.  All the long acting brinchodilators have the ability to cause this side effect.  Just an FYI.

I used this a few years ago, but found it aggravated my asthma symptoms before doing any good. Not what you want if having a rough time with breathing.

Ventolin no longer has any beneficial affect. No one took any notice when I was last ill and had to be admitted to hospital. I saw a new young doctor afterwards, who did listen and booked me in for a spirometer test while I was still having breathing difficulties to see and found there was no change to the readings before and after. At least it's on my records now. I've been prescribed atrovent as a reliever inhaler instead, but it takes time to be affective. I use serevent 125 as a preventive inhaler, while things are under control, but that has to be increased if my breathing is challenged by infection etc.

Thank you again ladies, I'm still taking the inhaler night and morning, have been for my follow up appointment and my peak flow is only 300 when it should be and used to be 400, so I have to stay on it for now, still get palps bit get these with my night sweats anyway though they do seem
Worst, I'm going to perservere for now and go back if they get worst to see what the alternatives ate, the inhaler does make my catarrh worst as well I always get this in the morning but definately worst.
