Is there anybody else on here with Osteoporosis?
« on: November 26, 2015, 03:14:25 PM »

Hello Ladies,

Just wondering if there are other ladies with Osteoporosis tucked away in MM.
I am particularly interested in what medication they are using and how they get on with it.
I am currently taking Alendronic acid, which whilst it's do-able is pretty tedious.
I'm intrigued as to how other osteoporotic (is this a real word?) ladies cope with things.

Thank you Ladies  :thankyou:

Dazned - Aww - Love the flowers

Stellajane - Thanks for the info about Alendronic acid.
I was a bit concerned that it mightn't be effective enough but it seems to have worked well for your Mum.
I had heard something about Strontium Ranelate has your Mum had any experiences with that?

CLKD - Well it's me does that count? ::)
I have contacted the NOS they were very nice but I was after more hands on experience.

My husband is doing well on Alendronic acid although it is tedious.  He is on the once a week dose.  Initially he was started on Strontium Ranelate but his consultant took him off after a few years it saying it was being phased out due to having cardiac involvement in some patients.  He was diagnosed aged 47, it is genetic in his family, his mother, his two brothers and our 35 year old son all have osteoporosis.

Gosh, how does your son cope with it, it's bad enough finding out when you're 57. Best wishes to him.

My GP mentioned the cardiac issues when I was enquiring about the Strontium Ranelate.
Taking a liquid before bed seems so much easier than staying upright for at least 30 mins before being able to eat or drink anything. My GP is smashing but she is very wary of  SR I trust her on everything else so......

I was diagnosed with osteopenia when I was in my early 50s and I take the once a week Fosamax (Alendronic acid). I'm not sure why people are saying it's "tedious" though. I've gotten into the habit of taking it Saturday mornings as soon as I get up. So it's pretty easy to stay upright then, and delay having breakfast for about 30 minutes. I never have breakfast as soon as I get up anyway. By the time I've made the bed, washed my face, been to the loo, and gotten dressed there's probably 15-20 minutes just there. Most days I will also be going for a walk as well, so it's probably more like an hour before I eat anything.

I would certainly stick with the med limpy because I took it initially for a few years and there was a definite improvement, and then I stopped taking it for another couple of years, and that certainly showed as well. I've been back on it for about 18 months now and I'm due to have my next BMD in June, so I certainly hope to see an improvement. My father had osteoporosis so it's something that really scares me because I saw what happened to him.

Hi limpy, yes it is a very strong genetic link.  Despite the family history our other son has been refused a bone scan as he is a 33 year old male and therefore not a 'high risk'.  The NHS said that to my husband aged 47 but he paid for a private scan which diagnosed it.  The consultant then dropped him back into his NHS list and has looked after him ever since.  He also looks after our eldest son who is being monitored yearly but not on treatment just yet.  Younger son is appealing but unfortunately lives away so husband's consultant cannot look after him but he is appalled that son number 2's PCT have refused him funding.

It is a family joke that husband and son get outpatients appointment letters from a menopause clinic to see a consultant gynaecologist, but he is very attentive and specialises in osteoporosis and interested in the family link that is manifesting in relatively young males.

Thanks for your time Dana - I find it tedious having to take the alendronic acid on an empty stomach without even being able to have a cup of tea or my usual pain relieving meds, hence the "tedious" comment. It's also not easy not being able to bend over when you drop things, which happens quite a lot when one has MS linked sensory impairment  ::)

The other concern I have, is my SIL has osteoporosis of the spine and osteopenia in her hip. She has been taking Alendronic acid for some time. The osteopenia in her hip has improved but the osteopososis in her spine has worsened.
Hence me not being totally convinced by Alendronic acid............

Gosh Babyjane it is absolutely appalling that the NHS won't perform the scan for your son.
Hope things can be changed for him.

Absolutely, if he breaks a bone in the future it will cost the NHS a lot more but they just look at the small picture.

Elder son broke tib and fib really badly, ongoing treatment and surgery over 18 months.  A brilliant Russian surgeon saved his leg and he doesn't even have a limp now which is brilliant but I dread to think what it cost the NHS but we didn't know about his osteoporosis when he did that.  It was some years ago and who thinks that their 30 year old son could be osteoporotic  :(.
