Information for Mature Patients.
People are living longer and have a right to expect the highest possible quality of life. But it's a sad fact that falls among older people are very common. And so many of these falls can be prevented.
Here are some simple steps to follow:
Regular physical activity.
Regular gentle exercise.
Tai Chi has been shown to improve balance and reduce risk of falls (but check that the teacher is experienced in working with older people).
Restricting your activity because of a past falls or fear of a fall may increase your changes of another.
Many problems after a fall are due to the “long lie†when somebody cannot get up, even if they have not injured themselves.
Use an alarm pendant, especially if you live alone.
When you get out of bed or off the chair it's a good idea
to do it in slow stages.
Have regular eye check ups and foot care – home visits may be available.
Ask you GP about getting a “flu jab†illness like flu can make you prone to falling.
If you need to go to the toilet in the night, never use a torch – turn the light on and if necessary use a walking aid. If you are feeling unwell – tell a friend or a neighbour
