Weakness
« on: October 05, 2015, 08:59:37 PM »

I am hoping that others get this....it is stressing me out. I feel like I have just run a marathon, but clearly I have not, and muscles in arms and legs feel weak. It is an effort to move them, it feels like although I have no problems moving them. They feel kind of rubbery and I just feel tired. I am sure I have some kind of nasty fatal disease( I know I don't......I hope), am trying to convince myself hormone related!!

We're all different, but for me it was hormonal. To get to this diagnosis, I had two years of tests, MRIs, brain scans and horrible drugs which made me feel worse. I had so many MS symptoms, I ended up seeing two different neurologists. Most of the time I had numbness and tingling, but this sometimes switched to aches and cramps. Had to give up running which really upset me, being a keen runner. Eventually one of the neurologists sent me to an endocrinologist - and that's where I found out I was so estrogen deficient.

I have since spoken to a colleague in her 20s who had exactly the same thing, but so badly she was hospitalised. Again, hormonal fluctuations were found to be the cause and she has been on the pill since (POP for some reason so no estrogen).

Apparently, there's a train of thought that it is due to water retention nudging nerves - similar to the carpel tunnel symptoms pregnant women get.

I really feel for you. It's horrid. What upset me most - and still does - is well meaning people saying the best way to cope with meno symptoms is exercise. There were days when I could not cope with putting shoes on, let alone exercise (and that's coming from a life long fitness fan!).

Big hugs x

Sparkle, I was thinking of you as I was typing. Our posts crossed! They tried to say I had Fybro, then CFS, but I fought for more tests. I just knew it wasn't CFS as it was so intermittent. It also started straight after a miscarriage which was another clue that it could be hormonal in my case. My GP at the time just wanted to sign me off - and that scared the life out of me. I think he was surprised I didn't want to be signed off work and told to sleep it off. Luckily new GP was far more supportive. I'm so lucky to have her!

Isn't it strange. Those of us who've had difficult hormonal situations - surgical meno, IVF, miscarriage etc - seem to be the ones with the weirdest symptoms.  ;D

Thanks Sparkle and Briony....always feels better once you realize your symptoms are shared. I think you are correct Briony, I believe I had been having subtle changes to my cycle and extra aches and pains but nothing horrible and nothing that I really even thought twice about. However about two years ago I had my gall bladder removed and all hell broke loose. Tingling..buzzing..moodiness..just scarry stuff. doctor at the time thought I may have MS so was re admitted back to hospital and checked out...everything OK. That still does not stop the fear that something else is going on...I am a nurse and have witnessed so many things that have been missed that all I could think of was that I was misdiagnosed. Medical knowledge does not help in this situation, I do not think. Sorry turned to a ramble...main point is that sometimes it seems that something traumatic happens in life or physically to body and seems to set things off worse. Wish I could just stop thinking about how I am feeling every day and just get on with things.....menopause symptom?

I don't know if this is relevant, but I used to get a weak & wobbly feeling in my arms and legs the day before/first day of my period - sometimes it would be so bad that my legs would literally give way and I'd end up on the floor!  Also severe joint pain and muscle cramps, although these usually eased as soon as the bleeding started.

Since starting peri, I've found the wobbly feeling strikes at random, but it is usually worse on a busy/stressful day AND when I am short of food.  I've found a 5 minute sit-down with a sweet snack (banana or an oatcake + few dates) at the first sign of a wobble usually stops it getting worse.

I've found that most of the symptoms that had a very definite link to my hormonal cycle when I was younger now pop up at random, especially the ones that were linked to the start of my period.  Maybe worth thinking about how you used to feel during your cycle...it's quite reassuring to realise that the 'scary new symptom' is actually one that you always used to have the day before you started bleeding, only you're not used to it appearing whenever it feels like it!
