coming off/changeing hrt
« on: September 30, 2015, 07:25:12 PM »

Hi Guys....long time no see :-) which means MM did its job in 2011/12
now 2015, lots have happened...
some will remember I MOVED HOUSE IN 2014 to convert a pub OMG!!
out the other side of that and had a breast cancer scare which is now over...phew.
going through that I was asked by the breast consultant if I was still having periods.
the answer was I don't know.. been on elleste duet 2mg since 2011 which caused a bleed every 28days but what my body was doing was hidden.
this prompted me to stop taking hrt to see what happened.
at end of a pack I just didn't start the next. now on day 42 cold turkey... mostly feel ok but can feel brain fog and tiredness coming back :-(  the main thing is no bleed in 42 days.
I know I need to go back on as brain death, tired and joint pains kicking in but what should I ask dr to put me on now?
I always got the right info here to arm me for Dr who hadn't a clue...lol
thanks in advance xxx

Hi again, missed your little bouncing bunny.

I have come off HRT recently, but I was on oestrogen only. I've been weaning myself off gradually though. When I joined this site nearly 6 years ago, I'd come off cold turkey. So far it's been easier this time. A few flushes per day sometimes even none. A few sweats too. GP gave me Clonidine to help with that. Still early days though. But I do still get that overwhelming tiredness some days, which in turn causes the brain fog. Not sure what your GP can do other than blood tests to see if anything else is causing the tiredness etc. Are you able to do some exercise a few times a week? I'm back at swimming & although I'm not sure it's helping, it's not doing any harm either.

Hi jax

Welcome back - I remember you from back then! Lots of new members since of course.... Do I remember you are/were in a band or have I got the wrong person completely?! Glad your BC scare is over and all is OK?

Re menopause and HRT I can't remember how old you are?

Well I would have thought you would have had a bleed by now if you were going to - although that's not to say you are completely past menopause ( depending how old you are) because for example you could still be late peri-menopause but also depends on what your periods had been doing in the months/years leading up to your starting HRT?

Unfortunately a resumption of symptoms does happen for some of us when we stop - they did with me when I stopped completely in 2011 for 3 months and a couple p=of years ago I reduced dose for a few months - and both times symptoms came back so I am back on the oroginal dose i started ( 50 mcg patch).

As you stopped completely - now might be the time to have a patch instead of a tabelt - and if you are post-menopausal you could go onto a continuous combined HRT. The only disadvantage is that you are then on progestogen all the time (no bleed). If you were OK on the Elleste including the combi pills in the second half of the month - then fingers crossed you could be OK. The closest patch is Evorel which comes as sequi (with withdrawal bleed like Elleste) or Evorel conti ( no bleed - but sometimes spotting at first for a few weeks/months). If you don't mind having a bleed then you could start with the Evorel sequi type for a few months and if you are fine on both patches all through the month  - then you could transfer to conti. Otherwise there is Femseven ( sequi or conti) or separate oestrogen and progesterone. All the different types are listed under peri and post (2nd tab along - treatments/HRT preparations)

Hope this helps!  :)

Do ask more Qs if you want more help!!

Hi Cuba Girl and Hurdity :-)
I remember you two too!
Yes still in a band, you got that right.
How are you both doing? I haven't had time to read through and catch up yet ;-)

Thanks for the info re patches... I am now 52...started on elleste duet 1 mg age 48 then 2mg in peri with night sweats, palpitations, irritability, brain dead and joint pains...
I was actually ok on elleste, both types so I suppose the question ...is it ok to just stay on it? I don't mind the bleed and its meant to protect womb?
I am slowly sinking back into a brain dead zombie and last 2 nights had night sweats and palpitations again which were the reason I went on hrt as sleep quality didn't help tiredness etc..
Think I will see dr, have fsh measured, see how savvy this one is and take it from there.. will keep you posted.
thanks guys xx

Hi jax

I'm fine thanks - glad my memory works a little bit  :) !! Hope the pub is going well? What an amazing undertaking!

Did the consultant say it was OK to continue to take HRT ie did you have breast cancer or was it a lump for example that turned out to be nothing sinister?

If so and you were OK on Elleste and you would rather stay ion something you know, then why not go back on it and see how you get on? Perhaps this time start again with the 1 mg and you might find that this will be OK for you? You can always change to a patch later on as you near 60 if you decide to stay on it in the long term.

Sorry about the typos in my last post - I must have been in a hurry  ::)

Hiya hURDITY....
lol more typos!
Consultant never said I had to stop taking hrt...it was me just seeing where I was at.
what I had/have is a funny nipple that is semi inverted and a stinging above it.
hasd mammogram and ultra sound and consultant was not concerned.
will keep an eye on things though.
Since original post I have had 2 decent nights and less tired...been up on the moor hiking today with my doggy so may hold off on restarting tabs ;-)
