NICE Menopause Guidelines
« on: May 28, 2015, 07:28:42 AM »

Anyone know when these might be available and any guesses on what they may contain.
I do hope the menopause associations have been involved.
I suppose I'm concerned that they may be anti HRT in some way .

Yes Annie, thats just the sort of thing I would expect them to say!
Heaven Help us.
I also think they will have a max time to be on HRT rule, which no doubt GPS will adhere to and cause more of us to seek private healthcare.

Yes because it's another piece of silly writing that health care professionals will stick by

So many people present symptoms to lots of conditions and are left untreated because of NICE guidelines

The original date was supposed to be 2015, and I imagine there will be a consultation draft out first which Dr Currie will probably post on here (not sure if it works like this though?). She will defo let us know when the next stage happens.

I am also sure that it won't be a "piece of silly writing" and I am optmistic that they will be updated to take into account the latest research, within the remit of the guidelines. Personally I look forward to women being able to quote them to docs if they encounter resistance to appropriate treatment with the HRT of their choice, because docs will have to take heed of them.

There already is no max time to be on HRT according to the leading experts - gynaecologists and learned menopause societies - and I see the guidelines as a way of officially endorsing these recommendations, as well as hopefully pointing the way to future research.

As someone who already has to go private for medication that's essential for me but isn't possible from my GP due to slavish devotion to NICE guidelines, I'm thinking the 'no over 60' rule and 'max 5 years' rule might be enforced, thereby driving us to misery or paying for private medicine.
It'll depend on how much they've listened to the views of menopause consultants (who don't all agree either) and how much is financially driven. More and more women are asking for HRT and the meno clinic I attend is hugely overburdened.

What never seems to get considered is the knock on effect of more sick women if they take away HRT from those who are benefitting from it. As so many of us know, many GPs are already HRT phobic.
I understand the need for a regulatory body but what it seems to have taken away in practice is individual assessment and treatment of patients in favour of a one size fits all. (There are exceptions to this rule I've found, with consultants, but never found it yet with a GP).

How fabulous would that be?  :)

Our Meno Clinic doc is part of a training team going around surgeries to try and build awareness amongst GPs, she's said it's really been neglected for 10 years so there's a lot of making up to do. Hopefully this latest update will help rather than hinder, I strongly suspect it'll be the former too. Fingers crossed !
