Breast clinic
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:22:36 AM »

I've today been referred to a breast clinic. Felt a small lump in one breast but both feel tender and generally lumpy. Anxiety in overdrive! What happens at the clinic? Will I have a mammogram that appointment or have to wait further after initial appointment? Feeling so horrible today anyway with heavier bleed than normal and nausea.
Can anyone tell me their experience of breast clinics?

I have only attended a clinic after a mammogram came up with something.

They go all out to be able to give you an answer on the day, so you have mammograms (more thorough and more focussed than the screening ones), examination and ultrasound.

If they are not sure, then they will do a biopsy on the day and you will have to wait for those results.  If it is a cyst or something like that, it can be dealt with on the day.

Everyone was very nice, helpful and from my experience, very thorough (they did not find anything, but tried very hard  ;D)

You could ring the Clinic and ask  ;) - how long do you need to wait for the appt.?

The Staff are usually matter of fact as they have 'seen it all before', however it is best to voice any concerns you may have!

If you have been referred to the breast clinic due to a lump then you should be given a mammogram at the first appointment and if this is inconclusive then the next step is ultrasound - on the same day. This is what happens at our breast clinic anyway. Fingers crossed for you.

Hi, thanks all.
My appointment is 9th June, doctor printed it out for me.
I do have general tenderness/soreness in both breasts but can feel small lump in area outside nipple on left side. Feels like a pea, moveable and tender.

Best get it checked then  ;)
Don't keep pulling and rubbing the lump as you will make the breast sore  ;)

Trying not to but keep checking it's still there. Then scare myself all over again!

Years and years ago I found what I thought was a lump. I was in my 30s so hadn't had a mammogram. I went to my GP who examined me and thought he felt something too. He he gave me a letter to take to the clinic....no computerised system then. Of course I opened the letter and scared myself silly.
I had a mammogram and an ultra sound and a small cyst was found. I was given a real ticking off for constantly prodding and poking at it as I had made it much more tender.

So, I know it's hard but try not to keep feeling it as it really will make things worse.

Let us know how it all goes.

I know honeybun, I'll try! Thanks. Fingers crossed it's a cyst.
Not sure whether to carry on with Estragel until it's checked. Didn't think to ask GP  :-\

Also a "one-stop shop" at my local hospital - mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy physical examination and consultant appointment all in the same visit.  Hopefully you will find it works like that at the hospital to which you've been referred, but as suggested previously, you could always give them a call to check what to expect on the day.  My suggestion would be to take some one with you if you can in case there's some waiting around and/or information to take in.

All the very best.

Hi jedigirl

Just to say like sparkle I have had a fibroadenoma and also a breast cyst which turned out to be a galactocoele  (milk lump). I was referred for both of them - found by feeling because way before the age for mammograms.

I always had tender lumpy breasts which used to get painful before a period and the fibroadenoma was just as you described - a small hard tender lump - varying from pea-sized to what felt like grape sized - which moved when touched and also painful. In those days I just had an ultra-sound, not a mammogram, and maybe I think it was repeated in a few weeks to see if it had grown but I can't remember how they decided it was this rather than a anything else! I know they said it was best to leave it untreated. Mine was nearer to the armpit on the left. They stuck a needle into the galactocoele to diagnose this as I was still breast-feeding.

Have you ever had generally lumpy breasts in the past or mastitis when feeding?

Sorry - not sure what is recommended re the oestrogel.  You don't want to make yourself feel worse and it is only a couple of weeks away.... perhaps ring the surgery?

I agree it's hard not to worry until your appointment - but if you can, try to do something to take you mind off it, and hope it goes well for you.

Thanks all
Hurdity, i fed my three children, for a least a year each time, 2 years my eldest. I had mastitis a few times, especially early feeding days. I have had lumpy boobs at times. Also they are so small I feel every lump and bump. Trying to be busy, started painting youngests room. Needed a sleep this afterrnoon though.
Thanks for support all 😘

Just quick update
Had my appointment at breast clinic today. In the space of an hour saw a doctor, had a mammogram, an ultrasound scan and saw doctor for results. Amazing service, we're so lucky in this country.
Results showed a cyst and lots of other smaller cysts. After two weeks of scaring myself this is good news. I have to go back in 6 weeks to see if it needs draining but doctor happy nothing sinister to see. The relief is huge and to be honest I'm proud of myself for getting through the two week wait keeping busy, working and keeping calm. A new me maybe!
Hope you are all having a good day  :)
