Polyps

Back at the end of 2013 I missed my first period but this was followed by a heavy period that lasted 53 days.  This stopped for 5 days and then started again, but this time only lasted for 5 days.  Since then I have been getting periods every 24 days or so until last month when I missed another period and this, again, was followed by a heavy period.  It started as spotting for a week and now has been heavy with clots for about a week but is still going strong.  I had a scan the last time it happened and they found a small polyp and they blamed the bleeding on this.  Do you think a polyp would cause this type of bleeding or is hormonal.  I am going to my gp today to ask for iron tablets and I don't want to get fobbed off again.  I can't believe a polyp would cause a period to be missed, it seems to me that it is hormonal (I am almost 49).

Any opinions would be gratefully received.

It sounds hormonal to me. You are probably experiencing symptoms due to both peri and the polyp. The polyp can cause heavier bleeding although clots are a good thing as it shows that your clotting mechanism is working well and peri causes periods to be very erratic.

If you have had blood tests which show you to be anaemic then your doc will prescribe iron tablets. If not, then, too much iron is as bad as too little. Why do you think you need iron?

Four weeks ago my ferritin was 8.6, which I think is low.  I am also feeling lightheaded, which could be anxiety.

Spoke on the phone to a gp who wasn't that concerned with my low ferritin level as my other levels were fine.  BUT, she is the first gp to say it is because I am perimenopausal.  She said that my bleeding pattern is hormonal and not because of my polyp.  It is such a relief to actually have someone say I am in perimenopause.  She was lovely and very sympathetic,  She did suggest that along with eating an iron rich diet I take an over the counter iron supplement.

Iron can cause constipation - if it ain't one thing  ::)

Eating every 3 hours can ease symptoms too.  Lots of green leafy veg.,  :-X - I had a polyp which my Private Gynae wanted to remove as it bled on contact, however, when I hit peri, it shrunk - all on it's own  ;)
