Our ovaries & hormones....
« on: April 29, 2015, 06:17:55 AM »

With reference to my last post, thought I would start a new one and get some of you very clever ladies input, Hurdity, I am hoping that you may have some input.

I supposedly went through meno @ the tender age of 38 and started on Oestrogel and Utrogestan when I turned 40...my 40's were great with absolutely no signs of meno, no flushing, anxiety nor any other nasties, felt perfectly happy & healthy. I did have my Oestrogen levels tested for interest sake a few yrs back and they were in the higher levels of 600...this leads me to believe that although original blood tests had indicated, that I was post menopausal by the age of 40, I am convinced that my ovaries were still giving off hormones, as I have only ever used 1 max 1 and a half pumps of the gel and yet my levels of oestrogen were relatively high and I was symptom free unless I am just one of those ladies who absorbs the oestrogen well.  But the fact that I am now, for the first time,  getting a few flushes and less days of withdrawal bleed as I have got into the 50's  tells me that my ovaries that I presumed were "dead" were in fact still partly functional?? At my last test my Oestrogen level showed to have come down to the 300 mark.

I guess what I am trying to say here is....that we should not underestimate our supposed dormant ovaries, my Dr said mine were just little blips on the scan as they appear to still throw out hormones whilst blood tests indicate post meno, I guess I may even have ovulated at times as I had ovarian cyst showing on the scan for a couple of yrs and then it disappeared....perhaps this is why some women who go through early meno do in fact end up falling pregnant after being diagnosed....
What do you ladies think?

I know that when I had my hysterectomy last year at the age of 60 the consultant was adamant that I should keep my ovaries as they excrete hormone in small amounts for the rest of our lives so even though post meno they presumably are still making a bit of a difference?

Hi Cassie

I realise I asked about your age and where in meno on your other post/thread but hadn't seen this one ( haven't been on for a couple of days and work through from the top ( letst unread) first so never get to some of them!

If you were diagnosed as post-meno one of the basis of blood tests and irregular periods then that is known to be inaccurate. That paper on stages of reproductive ageing I posted a link to a while back said that during the peri stage FSH levels go into the post-menopausal range. Also Dr Currie herself says on this site you can't rely on blood tests.

http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/diagnose.php

A normal level does not exclude early menopausal transition and a raised level does not exclude continuing ovarian function. One raised level should therefore not be relied upon as a reason to stop using contraception since egg release can still occur late in the menopausal transition.

You will know this already - but just to say it sounds very much from your symptoms that your ovaries were functioning sporadically and you weren't post-meno.  As you say you didn't need much oestrogen to control your symptoms, and you had a good bleed. Since it takes two years following the last period ( or last ovulation) for levels to decrease to their all time low, even if they were still working now and again, this probably wasn't enough for your oestrogen levels to fall substantially hence you didn't experience symptoms.

Hope I'm not talking through my hat....  :-\

300 still sounds like a reasonable level though - I would love to be able to increase mine but worried to do so at my age.... if you can cope with how you feel and you are well into your 50's i would be tempted to keep on with the same dose if you can, but if it becomes such that it is interfering with your quality of life then I wouldn't hesitate to up it a little...

Dont think we know nearly a fraction of what we should know about what happens to the ovaries after we stop having periods.  I am pretty sure that they keep on secreting hormones at some level.  We should unlock the secrets of what goes on with them.  I have read that they secrete testosterone.  If we had more information it would benefit women's overall health. The brain seems not to give up on its drive to get the ovaries to continue performing their task of producing egg cells!  It is staggering really that nature's purpose is to keep us as reproductive beings!
