Upped HRT dose, but bowel issue reared it head again
« on: April 24, 2015, 08:42:38 AM »

Hi Ladies

Part of my perimenopause symptoms was IBS, and the evorel hrt patches really helped, but now that I have gone onto 100mcg evorel, my IBS has come back, not as bad as before, but my bowel isn't working properly again, as in, when I use the loo, only half comes out, and I have smelly gas again (sorry for TMI)
Is this normal for some perimeno symptoms to get worse when you up the hrt dose?
Will it settle down?
Thanks

Hi Dandelion

Sorry I can't help with this one. I wouldn't have thought your HRT dose had much if anything to do with it really. I have no experience of IBS and never take much notice of what my bowels are doing - although they are quite variable (!). I would have thought changes in your diet, exercise, how much your drink and any other oral meds you are taking would have more of an effect than transdermal HRT.

Hi Hurdity

My IBS was really bad before the HRT started taking effect.
I told my GP about it, the nice one who gives me my HRT without going on about cancer risk.
She said that lack of oestrogen has an effect on the bowels.
My diet got better once my HRT kicked in, because prior, my mood was so low, and with me, the lower the mood, the lower the food intake.

Hi Dandelion :)

I found I had bowel problems when my Oestrogen went too high recently. I just wasn't going  properly- TMI - small amount and several times a day, instead of just the morning. I reduced the HRT dose (for a variety of symptoms) and now I'm back to normal  :D

Mind you, I always found my periods affected my bowels so I guess they're just hormone sensitive!

Hello Dandelion.

In my trusty meno book Dr Stoppard states that oestrogen promotes gut motility and progesterone slows things down. Hormonal changes can therefore cause diarrhoea or constipation.

I usually had loose stools on day two of a period and I have noticed a variety of changes since entering meno and using HRT.

Your symptoms may well settle down as you become used to the new HRT dose and in the meantime perhaps some over the counter remedies will be of help.

Wishing you well.

Hi LAdies

I know I am not on too much oestrogen, because the 75mcg wasn't quite helping my flushes or moods enogh and my bowels were not runny but not working properly, ie. firm stool, just not fully emptying.
I will wait for the new dose to settle in.
I am so just finished a taper from my antidepressants, as they were making me messed up in the head. I have had some non meno sweats, ie, no boiler in the upper part of my body, just sweaty all over, and it has recently occured to me that the diarrhoea and sweats may be due to adjusting to being without my trazodone antidepressant so I will give it a bit more time.
thanks though

You may be right Dandelion - found this

"Digestive disturbances are frequently experienced during the withdrawal process and may take different forms. Nausea, with or without vomiting, is commonly reported. Some patients may become constipated, while others may develop diarrhea. In some situations, alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea may occur. Mild to moderate intestinal cramping may occur, but any sudden or severe pain should be reported to a doctor."

Hi Taz, thanks.
Luckily, I am only having one disturbed stool on a morning, with the AD withdrawal, not like perimeno induced diarrhoea where I go to the loo several times without feeling empties. Sorry for TMI. :)
