Guided Cortisone Injection
« on: April 21, 2015, 07:40:08 PM »

Hi Ladies,

On Friday I am having a Guided Cortisone Injection into my Thumb joint in the Operating Theatre for Arthritis.  Has anyone had this done? and does it hurt?  To be honest I am terrified and getting really worked up about it as it gets nearer to Friday.

Over the last 2 years have had Operations done on both of my arms for Cubital and Carpal Tunnel and both times have had a nerve block done and sailed through it but just having this Cortisone Injection is frightening me to death.

I think its because I know that the needle is going into the joint and sounds really painful.  Have got to be at the Hospital for 7.15am and I know that on Thursday night I wont be able to sleep for worrying about.

Can anyone reassure me?

Nope.  It may well be painful.  Do you mean 'guided' as in under X-ray control?  You should be given a local anaesthetic prior to the Depomedrone injection, I would be ringing the Dept. to find out more!

I really don't know if it's the same but my mum had a cortisone injection the year before last into her shoulder joint. She was 91 at the time. It was done in her GPs surgery.

She coped just fine.

I'm sure you will be just fine and it will be over and done with very quickly.

Can I ask why it's being done in theatre.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I expect it's under X-ray control so that the Dr can see where the joint problem is.  I've seen hips done that way and the patient is given a complete anaesthetic ……..

CLKD its under X-ray.  When I had my arm operations done, there were people having hips done under X-ray too.  Before my arm operations I too had Cortisone jabs done at the GP's into my wrists but because this one is into the joint my Orthopaedic Consultant is doing it in the theatre.

He said that if doesn't ease the pain then it will mean more Surgery so fingers crossed that it works.

It's guided by ultrasound CLKD. One of my work colleagues has had this done on both thumbs (at different times) and both times she returned to work - driving herself. The injection was not painful but it did hurt a bit when the numbness wore off but she was advised to take painkillers before that happened.

Try not to worry - it will be worth it to get rid of the pain and stiffness in your thumb.  I found this info which gives a really clear idea of what to expect http://www.bupa.co.uk/health-information/directory/j/joint-injections

Hi Ladies

Injection done. Only in theatre for 20 mins.  It was done under Ultra Sound.  Didn't feel the needle going in but felt it go between the joint.  Getting quite painful now but taking pain killers. Doesn't help being my right hand.  They told me it may be painful for a few days

Just hope it works or will had to go back to have surgery on it.  Got to see the Consultant in August now.

Fingers crossed.

No CLKD already done the Physio and had splits made for it but none of these things worked.  If this doesn't work now the Consultant said that I will probably new surgery.

How's the pain and stiffness now?  I expect you'll be seen at follow up in about 4-6 weeks?

Tonight CLKD its stiff and still swollen. Aching like nothing.  Don't think I will get much sleep tonight. Painkillers don't seem to be kicking in.  Can only have Co-Codamol or Parceatamol.  Can't take anti-imflamatories because of my BP tablets.
Did think about trying the heat pad for a while but it is probably internal bruising that causing the aching. The Nurse at the Hospital said it could take a week to see any improvement after the injection has been done.

Have got to see the Consultant again in August
