Hello ladies. I've taken utrogestan 100 nightly on a continual basis for a few months now, using it vaginally. I have decided to take it orally instead now as I just don't want to be inserting capsules every night!
Does anyone know what differences I can expect taking it orally instead? I seemed to remember a lady saying she stopped bleeding altogether when using it orally but as soon as she started inserting them vaginally she bled again? So should I expect to stop bleeding? Despite taking it continuously I still bleed every few weeks (ultrasound showed no probs btw) - I'd be interested to hear anyone's experience or advice.
Ps how important is it to take on an empty stomach? Hubby and I eat late so foresee this as a prob...

Hi sorry can't help but just to say I will be starting to take it soon ,vaginally,never used any pessary type thing before was there a problem that way for you? I've been led to believe that way has fewer side effects. I only need to use mine 12 days.
Apparently it has to be taken on an empty stomach and I was told it is important to do this. Sure others will be along soon also. Hurdity is the expert on this x

No there wasn't a problem as such but I found it often created quite a bit of discharge during the following day which wasn't ideal. Also I think i would have stuck with it longer if I could have used some kind of applicator but i realised inserting it myself just isn't my cup of tea! X

Mine come with an applicator so hopefully I won't struggle !

Thanks Dazned- I had no idea I could get utrogestan with an applicator. Just a thought- do u think it would work with a canesten applicator?

I don't see why not ,it's only a tool for placement after all !

Kittyjay - if you are getting spotting etc on the Utrogestan then have you thought of going back onto a cycle - it sounds like you are not post-menopausal yet and your own hormones are breaking through? If you have no uterus problems, that is probably the only explanation, unless your oestrogen dose is also quite high?

I agree re  inserting capsules every night - I am on a long cycle for just that reason, as I don't want to take it orally. It's a bit of a bind still having a bleed at 61 though!

The empty stomach thing is weird though - because the info shows that the bio-availability of progesterone is increased when taken with food -  but that can't be a bad thing - except it could give rise to more side effects?? Generally much of the progesterone taken orally is lost in digestion and going through the liver, so a much higher dose is taken than actually gets into the system. It is also an unstable compound.

Hi Annie0710 - when I am using utrogestan (at night) I use Vagifem in the morning just to vary what I put up there and when  . I just use fingers - it's quite easy - just like a tampon only a bit further up!

dazned - have you been prescribed Utrogestan 200 mg vaginal for fertility? It does not come with an applicator normally as it is only licensed for oral use for HRT, unless you are being prescribed it privately and the dispensary provides one separately?

I was prescribed them from my consultant and the box came complete with the applicators,all shrink wrapped together ,box of 21.

At 55 hope it's not for fertility

I was told not.to use.utrogestan vaginally as i also use vagifem.  I use it to prevent endo regrowth after surgery though.

Hurdity - I'm on estradot 50 which I don't think is high especially for my age (43) ??
I have considered going back on a day 15-26 cycle with the utro and upping to 200 for this.
Is there a benefit to doing a cycle rather than continuous utro? Utro has a kind of anti depressant  effect on me which is great but I do feel exhausted most of the time so I don't know what's best at the mo.....
