Definitely recommend Pilates for toning the tummy. Worked for me. I went to classes for about 18 months (& made new friends too which was great). Then our teacher emigrated and I couldn't get to any other classes due to work commitments. I bought a  book and worked out my own routine that I do at home, though not as often as I should . Difficult to motivate without the company of others.
I would say that if you had not been to a "proper" class first then it's would be quite difficult to do this from a book alone as all the ones I found presumed you had some knowledge of the subject and some of the exercises were much too difficult for a beginner

Also , everytime you bend down to pick something up - pull your tummy in first, little things, and see a doctor and voice your concerns , print out symptoms and say you need to be checked. Its a silent killer
