Teenage cancers etc.
« on: March 16, 2015, 08:54:16 PM »

"sarnovia sarcoma" - apparently affects more lads than lasses.  There is a lad living close to relatives whose whole leg has been amputated as well as part of his hip - presumably the pelvic 'cup' has been cleaned out as the leg was removed.  As a medical secretary I would love to see the X-rays and become involved …….

Now the family/friends are having to raise over £70,000 for a total leg prosthesis and more money for this to be maintained every 18 months.  I feel I want to do something  :-\ ………. he's 20, I remember having my WHOLE Life ahead of me: the excitement of new challenges [less anxiety then], looking forwards …….

If I knew that his prognosis is good or that the funds raised can be put to other uses or to another patient should he die I might be going ahead with a few quidders ……….

Has anyone supported such a cause?

Synovial?

Sounds like a very difficult, challenging situation for anyone.

Playing devil's advocate here.... Is this lad in UK?  If so, is a prosthetic limb and its ongoing maintenance not provided on the NHS?

To answer your question... no, I haven't supported such a cause for a specific individual.

He may be able to get help from The Teenage Cancer Trust https://www.teenagecancertrust.org/

The NHS won't fund a 'bionic' replacement.  Nor the after care which when I read the article correctly, needs servicing every 4-5 years.  £18,500.  Thanks Taz I was thinking Help for Heroes too ……. different situations but similar outcome.

Now need to discuss with DH …… the lad was 3 days short of his 20th birthday at diagnosis and I want to help

Have his parents started fund raising CLKD.

The internet seems to be the place to do it these days. Perhaps a blog.

The usual local fund raising things are always helpful but perhaps wait for word from the parents.
Do you know them personally.

Poor soul, life just isn't fair sometimes.

No contact, don't know the family at all but my heart went out.

Yep they are Fund Raising via a local 'wish'-type Trust so it's all above board.  When I think back to my 20s ……...

You can always make a donation then which is great.

It's wonderful how people learn to manage. Think of all the young men injured in the last few wars. They are remarkable. The young are so resilient and at least he has a good chance of living a full life.

I hope he recovers well CLKD. It does seem strange that his parents have to raise money for a prothesis. My brother in law had to have one following a road accident and his is excellent and provided on the NHS. Maybe it's a special type of one he needs? There is usually a "maintenance appointment" every six months to check that all is still fitting well.

It's good that there is a fund raising page. I would donate in that way. Easy to do and you know that the money is going straight to where it is needed. http://sarcoma.org.uk/soft-tissue-sarcoma

As I explained the lad needs a bionic prosthesis which the NHS cannot fund at £70,000 ……. plus maintenance costs.

What a very sad situation for someone so young.  I hope he gets what he needs to make the most of life.

(CLKD - I wasn't sure from you comment earlier that you were thinking that Help For Heroes may be able to support this lad.  Help for Heroes supports veterans and serving personnel who have been wounded or injured, or have become sick, as a result of serving their country so doesn't sound like he falls into their remit(?)).

I know that.  But sharing experiences could be good for both sides, those who have seen combat and reached the situation he finds himself in through cancer.  Access to physio., bionic limbs etc., sharing in particular the psychological effects …….

Ah - I missed that part. He'll be put in touch with others through charities such as Teenage Cancer Trust and they also give loads of support to the families of cancer patients.

How much have they raised so far?
