When to start patches
« on: January 30, 2015, 06:35:53 PM »

Hi ladies,

I saw my lovely GP yesterday and he's given me Estradot 25 patches and Provera tablets. We used this site together to make an HRT for me. :)
The question I have is whether to start the patches now or wait till my next period which might come in the next 7 days (ish). I'm not currently on any hrt and the leaflet says I can start now if I want to.

What would you advise?

I would start the day your period finishes to keep in line with your natural cycle Galadriel at least that way you have a bench mark.

We all have a personal natural cycle that goes on until at least to ours seventies even without having periods.

Others may suggest starting when you like.

Hi SL - given how sore my boobs are at the moment I'd say a period is due imminently... maybe patience is a virtue (Autocorrect tried to change patience to pestilence  ;D )

Well done Galadriel! What a fantastic GP?

Which leaflet says start when you like? Also presumably you are taking the HRT cyclically ie 14-16 days oestrogen and 12-14 days Provera because you are still having periods?

If that is the case then I agree with silverlady that it's best to wait until your period - but if they have been irregular then you may well be out of sync (ie HRT with your cycle) and experience bleeding at odd times - but might as well start in sync!

If it is 14 days per 28 that is quite a high dose of progestogen for a low dose patch, but if you are peri-menopausal, have skipped periods and some are very heavy, then the extra progestogen at this time will probably help control the bleeding.

As a matter of interest Any reason why you and your doc chose Provera over Utrogestan?

If your period does not arrive within a couple of days of the expected time I would just go ahead and start.

Hope it goes well!   :)

I would wait. If you don't then your cycle albeit a bit unpredictable will be out of sync with your HRT.

When I started my HRT I had not had a period for seven months so who knows  ::)

Wait and see how your cycle works.....by the sound of things you won't have to wait long and then start.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Hurdity,

My lovely GP is the spitting image a Dara o'Brien with matching soft Irish accent.

The leaflet is the patient info leaflet.
I've had MPA before when I had really heavy periods (ablation fixed that one) and I felt brill on it so we thought we'd try it again. The instructions are for last 10 days of my cycle and I'm perimenopausal. If it no longer has the feel good factor, I've to go back and get a script for Utrogestan.

He's even put this amazing site on his phone home screen to share with other lady patients (we're an all male surgery)

My cycle tracker app has given up trying to predict the next cycle but the boob pain is usually a good predictor. I will start if I've not come on by this time next week.

Thank you  ladies :)

Galadriel - sounds good!  I love your GP - he is an example to them all  :) . Great that you only have to have MPA for 10 days per 28 too.
