Changing HRT advise please
« on: January 29, 2015, 08:56:08 PM »

Ok so I'm on Femoston 1/10 and doing ok on it for 9 months. The prog in it suits me. I have become aware since starting it I have stomach issues, always feel bit bloated, and a feeling of raw throat and stomach like the lining is away a bit have this is nose and down below too. Thinking  of changing to gel oestragel and Utrogestan. I have read that it is much the same as Femoston and would like your opinions on this if any of you lady's have had Femoston and changed to the above.
Also if I decided to go for patch instead of gel what is your recommends?

Hi Millykin

Some of your post about what you are feeling doesn't make sense - are you saying you think the tablets affect your throat, nose and stomach? Sorry I'm not quite clear!!

Anyway if you have any unusual symptoms that may not be due to the HRT perhaps wait a while to see if they settle and then go to the doctor to get checked out?

Otherwise, transdermal HRT is definitely recommended if it is the tablets which are upsetting your digestion.

http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/route.php

Indications for non-tablet route.

    Individual preference.
Poor symptom control with tablet HRT.
Side effects such as nausea with tablet.
Bowel disorder which may affect absorption of tablet therapy.
History of migraine (when steadier hormone levels which may be achieved with a patch may be beneficial).
Lactose sensitivity (all tablet preparations of HRT contain lactose).
    History of gallstones.
Current use of medications such as anti-epileptic medication which may interfere with the break-down of tablet HRT.
    Variable blood pressure.
    High triglyceride levels.
Risk factors, family history or past history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus, after full discussion and specialist advice when necessary.

I have never used tablet HRt so can't comment here, but for most of the now almost 8 years that I've been on HRT I have used Estradot patches which are very small - and I am very happy with this. You will find that gel users will recommend this too! Personally I couldn't be bothered with the faff of having to apply it every day!

Ye I know dosent make sense!
What I mean is, I know I could eat anything before HRT stomach issues were not a problem but now it feels almost raw. I feel everything. Nose lining feels thinner too, some days it bleeds when I blow it. Down below well that will be due to peri meno. I did mention to GP last time about my stomach was given oemprozole but she did say some women find tablet form a bit harsh on stomach and we could discuss again next appointment. I feel Femoston is good but wether I need the 2/10 or I'm not absorbing tablet form as much as I should be. Flushes back a bit but no regular bleeds. She told me to think about patches, gels etc. as long as I get bio then I would give it a go

I do know that excess estrogen can cause dry eyes and mouth so it could well be that it could effect the lining of the nose.

I would go back and ask the GP if you can try a patch and suitable progesterone.

Taking omegas  3 and 6 may help.

Due my review tomorrow on HRT. I just can't make my mind up. Do I stick with Femoston 1/10 although don't think its high enough, few break through bleeds (or not absorbing enough, I've heard this is common in tablet form) do I try 2/10 in the hope it works and stops the burning down below or do I try oestragel which I'm keen on as I know it dosent have to go through liver and is absorbed better along with Utrogestan, but orally or inserted? I better make my mind up quick but so hard when I'm having a good day.

Thanks to ladies who have already replied. Swaying towards gel but there's that what if lurking

Hi Millykin,
You may remember I have just switched from Femoston to Utrogestan and Oestrogel.
I'm only only my 8th dose but so far going pretty well. I've managed to avoid the hideous nauseous dip after my period, my stomach feels more settled, my mood more even (though mild anxiety lingers), I've had no headaches or foggy head. Last week I had moments of real euphoria, singing in the shower and feeling happier! My appetite is better too. It's been a revelation up to now, though I'm aware it's early days. The extra progesterone certainly suits me.
I'm taking the Utrogestan orally for days 1-25 and 2 pumps of gel on a morning. x

I started my meno journey on Evoril sequi . Stuck well and I had no side effects despite having a very sensitive tummy.
I am now on half a patch on the conti version.

I tried urtogestan and I'm one of the ones it just did not suit. It made my bladder positively hurt and gave me one of the most painful bleeds I have ever had. It was a nightmare. Different strokes I guess.

Hope you can get something to suit. I find the patches great.....slap it on twice a week and then forget it.

HB we are all different, at my last appointment we discussed gel and Utrogestan as GP thinks tablet may be upsetting stomach she gave a choice and get back to her. I think Utrogestan would suit as the prog in Femoston certainly does and it's similar.

I was looking for some of your posts earlier. Glad you replied to mine. So good your are feeling better with it although anxiety in background I think a lot of women struggle with. Yours is the regime I was looking for, is it 200mg Utrogestan each day? Orally? I just can't believe everything improved so quick first 3 months on Femoston then levelled out and now rapidly declining again. I'm noticing down below really annoying lately and flushes back a bit.
I feel good today probably because got appointment tomorrow so made a few notes in case I feel good tomorrow and I don't want to walk in and hit GP with ye I'm great no change needed and kick myself when I leave!
Anyway if I change and don't like it I know Femoston does. Thanks for help ladies much apprieciated x

I'm taking 100 mg a day orally days 1-25. I was undecided about changing too but felt that Femoston wasn't doing enough for me, especially with the spells of nausea from the fluctuations in hormones.
Its so hard to decide what is best for you but if Femoston isn't doing what you hoped you might feel better on this regime. Hope all goes well at docs x

Have a question on your HRT patch.  You mention "half a patch" - are you cutting the patch that is combined estrogen/progestin?  I just started to do this but am concerned that maybe it is not the right thing to do?  Any advise?

Lol - fingers crossed for you  :)

I have to say, I really like the Utrogestan part of my cycle - so much so that I dislike stopping it. I'm going to ask if I can do 100mg for 26 days to avoid the 'dip'. Which route will you use? I don't take it orally at present, but will do if I take it for 26 days (don't fancy the mess  ::) ) x

Well I'm going to start inserting see how that goes if not suitable I'll take orally, I might try and talk her into 100mgs for the 26 days cause I like the prog in Femoston and hate that dip too when off it but if that's a no I'll take the 200mg for however many days. I'm talking here as if I've got it already ! X
