I think i'm going mad
« on: November 28, 2014, 12:35:45 PM »

Hi ladies,
New to this forum and looking for help. I am experiencing several symptoms of being peri menopausal, mood swings, anxiety, palpatations, joint pain, and terrible flushes and night sweats. Have been to see my gp who was very understanding and started me on Citalapram 20mgs  (too soon to know if it is helping), she also did a full bloodscreen which are all normal including my hormone levels, am i going mad or could i still be so symptomatic with normal hormone levels? I am 47yrs old and have a mirena coil in so cannot track my periods.
Very grateful for any advice xxx

:welcomemm:  sounds like peri-menopause to me.  Hormone blood tests are reliably un-reliable  ::) due to the continual changes in levels.  One needs to 'go' on symptoms.  ADs can help in that they can enable us to 'see the wood for the trees' and is the way GPs usually go  >:( : but you need to discuss HRT with your GP/Practice Nurse.  HRT can help ease hot flushes, will protect heart and bones …….

Have a read of the menus, left of screen.  Make notes.  Take them with you to your next appt..

Sometimes "normal" can mean "normal for your age range" i.e. it is normal to be in peri-menopause from your early forties. At your age I would have thought that HRT (if you want to take it) would be beneficial as before the normal age of meno (50/51) it doesn't carry the small risks which are associated with it after normal meno age. It will help protect your heart and your bones. Were you prescribed the citalopram for depression or for control of flushes?

I'm not sure how a hormone level can be accurate if you have the mirena coil? Not sure - someone else will be along soon to advise.

Hi veronica67 and welcome to the forum. You will get lots of help on here but just wanted to say that citalopram has eased the flushes and sweats for me and helped reduce anxiety. It wasn't a quick fix though and I have no knowledge about HRT but as CLKD says ADs do give you a breathing space to decide the best way forward. Hope you feel better soon.

Hey there Veronica

I take Citralopam and have a mirena too. I use Beta blockers Propananol to help anxiety and Oestrogen 2mgs to top up HRT side.....all just about ok on these

Take one step at a time , when I started AD's I felt much worse to begin with but it will settle and at least take the edge of your anxiety ....little steps and be kind to yourself xx
