Please can anyone offer some urgent advice - I am 50 and unsure where I am with meno as I have been on hrt for 8 years.  A couple of months ago I had some light spotting which has been ongoing.  My gp has done an ultrasound and trans vaginal unltrasound and the endrometrium was normal.  the bleeding is coming from the uterus not the cervix.   I have now come off hrt but the spotting is still happening - I am very frightened and my have to have a biopsy - has anyone else had this type of bleeding (ie both on hrt and off?) and has anyone had an endrometrial biopsy and how painful is it?

Hi Helen

I'm not on HRT and would probably be classed as perimenopausal. I still bleed but have no idea if it's a period or not as they are so erratic and irregular. I've experienced heavy bleeding at times and just spotting at times. I too have had a transvaginal ultrasound (two in fact) and got to have another one in 3 months as I have some ovarian cysts. I'm seeing a gynae consultant in Dec as it seems likely that I will have to have a biopsy to see if there is a reason for the bleeding other than just hormones. It is frightening but I think it's better if we get things checked out to be on the safe side. There are ladies on here that have been through the biopsy, some have had a GA some not. I'm sure that someone will come along on your thread that has been through it to offer advice.
In the meantime try not to worry too much! Easier said than done I know. x

Hi helenart

Sorry to hear about your problems - but your doctor is doing the right thing in referring you on because of unusual bleeding. Far better to refer on too many women who find nothing wrong than to miss one where there is something serious.

In your case - perhpas you could ask what the thickness of the endometrium was when they said "normal" as there is a range for this.

You haven't said what HRT you are on? There are all sorts of reasons for bleeding on HRT - sometimes the endometrium can become too thin and ulcerated from too much progesterone, and this can cause bleeding. Sometimes it is the opposite reason - it has become too thick from too much oestrogen so this causes bleeding. Sometimes it can be due to fibroids or polyps ( not sure if these are normally picked up from the transvaginal scans?).

The same thing happened to me last year. I had spotting after sex and was referred. The TVS showed the lining to be too thick and also they could see an abnormaility on the surface of the endometrium and I was referred for a hysteroscopy  (to look at the lining properly with a camera) and biopsy (to check for a condition known as endometrial hyperplasia which can lead to cancer).

I had no anaesthetic but heeded the instruction to take 2 Ibuprofen and 2 paracetamol an houir before the procedure so didn;t feel anything and I was only in the room probably for 15 mins - it was very quick and efficient. Some women have not had such good experiences so I think it must depend who you get and where you are. Perhpas you could google the proecdure and the hospital you are likely to be referred to to see what others said? Maybe there is th eoption of choosing which hospital?

Personally I would not want to have a GA for what is a very minor investigative procedure, since GAs themselves are noit without risk (Ive never had one though so this would make me more nervous than the procedure which didn't bother me at all!). I also gave permission for them to remove a polyp if they found one - which they didn't.

Everything was OK in my case - the abnormailty was a small fibroid which they weren't worried about, but I was so please to have been referred.

I agree with carol try not to worry and it will soon be over!
