Utrogestan dose and mood
« on: November 11, 2014, 08:17:45 AM »

Hi

I recently posted about changing my Utrogestan dose from 200mg for 15 days to 100mg for 25 days. I'm really struggling with low mood and anxiety on the lower dose, although both doses equate to the same. I felt better on the higher dose so I asked if I could have a more constant dose, hence the change. Would the change in dose affect mood and anxiety? Has anyone else experienced similar? I am considering going back to the 200mg dose, at least 'hopefully' I will fell better for a few days each month. I thought I'd really settled on Utrogestan but I am now starting to doubt it. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi shellb

I can't remember if you are still peri or post meno now?

if you are still peri then it is very difficult to say what is doing what ie whether it is the change in dose of Utrogestan or your own natural hormones. Once you are two years post-menop things become more predictable so easier to experiment and know what is causing any changes in mood or symptoms!

Also sorry I can't remember if you take it vaginally or orally - if orally then the amount getting into your system can vary depending on your own digestion etc as it is a very unstable compound.

It is very unlikely that increasing progesterone could cause improvements in mood and decrease cause anxiety, since progesterone is a mood dampener - it is a sedative, and these effects are more pronounced at higher doses. However for a few days following the decrease from 200 mg to 100 mg you could experience progesterone withdrawal symptoms - similar to pmt until your bidy stabilised at the lower level, and then you would experience this again when you stopped at 25 days.

Could your own cycle be coming into play? What about the oestrogen dose you are taking? Maybe you could try increasing this?

I would suggest trying it like this for another couple of months to see if your body settles, and if not think about changing the oestrogen dose or going back to a proper cycle.

I sympathise because it is hard to actual settle permanently on a regime during peri-menopause (if you are) because of your own hormones. Sorry this isn't much help! Hopefully others in the Utrogestan gang will have something to say too!

Thanks Hurdity
I've started spotting on day 15 of 25 the same happened last month but around day 20. I've not had break through bleeding before so I'm more convinced that this dose doesn't suit me. I am still peri so how will I know when I am post menopause if I am using hrt? My oestrogen is evorel 50.
Thanks

Hi shellb

You won't know when you are post-menopausal if you start HRT before your periods have finished. You might be able to make an educated guess depending on what your periods were doing when you started HRT and how old you were - but because individual menopause is so variable it might not be accurate. Most women (not sure of the percentage) have reached menopause by the time they are 54 - but I might not have been, because I had my last natural period at 53 1/2 and started HRT 5 months later so might have been older. Many women will reach meno younger than this though.

When you are post-meno as I said, you should experience more stability in mood etc because your hormones will not be fluctuating - unless you remain on cyclical HRT - but at least the dips will be predictable!

I hope you manage to sort out the right regime that works for you.
