Citalopram not working after 3 weeks - when will it kick in?
« on: October 29, 2014, 04:46:43 PM »

Hello,

I've been taking Citalopram for just over 3 weeks now. After 10 days did have a spell when I felt much better - anxiety and depression reduced and slept a bit better. For the past few days anxiety has returned however - palpitations and general feelings of anxiety most of the time. Is this normal?

Hoping someone who's experienced this drug can tell me that it WILL get better as at the moment feels like it will never happen.  Feels like I'm going backwards not forwards.

Seeing GP next week but could do with some reassurance :-)

Hi Suey, I found that I had short spells of feeling better then felt bad again. As time went on the good spells starting getting longer and longer with only a few blips.
Hope this helps.

You may require a hike in dosage.  You are noticing a positive which should, once you have sorted out a maintenance dose, remain  ;)

If I find my brain gets low for more than 3 days I up my dosage for 5-10 days until my brain feels better.  It's an organic that gets forgotten often!

Hi suey, I've been on citalopram 10mgs for almost 6 months now and it was slow to act but after about a month I realised I was feeling better, less anxious and sleeping better. My GP did suggest upping the dose and I tried 15mgs for three weeks but didn't feel any benefit so dropped back to 10. Now I feel a lot more settled, though still have ups and downs but generally I think  it has helped a lot and feeling better in myself means I can get on with life and not let anxiety take over so I shall be sticking with it for now. GP says a year at least but she is happy for me to take it as long as I need.
.Hope this helps.

Hi Suey, when I started Citalopram a year ago, i started at 10 mg for about three-four weeks. I still felt anxious and not well generally and was advised by doc to up the dose to 20mg. This settled things up and I am still on that dose. At my revent visit to the doc he suggested that I start weaning off the med. not sure whether I am ready so will postpone fo after Ch-s holidays.

Good luck

It is wise not to do any alteration of medication between now and mid-February!  Why do you need to wean off anyway ………

Thanks all - feeling a bit better today after sleeping last night. Really hope I carry on improving as finding it very hard to cope with.

Anyone needed to take more than 20mg to feel an improvement (although sure GP won't consider increasing dose yet as it's not been 4 weeks yet)?
