struggling to sleep
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:35:51 PM »

I'm having trouble sleeping.   We have been away since Monday and I haven't had a decent nights sleep since we arrived.  I know it is only a couple of nights but I am shattered and worried I won't sleep properly again.  The days are pretty full and exhausting but I am resting when I can, but I just can't get off to sleep.  I just lie there awake.

Any tips?  What's the longest you have been without a decent nights sleep. Need reassurance that I will be ok.

Thank you

I always struggle to sleep to start with in a strange bed. By the end of the week I am usually fine.

Rest up when you can and try not to stress about it. A glass of warm milk and a couple of paracetamol before bed might help. Failing that an antihistamine could help short term.

Hope you sleep tonight.

Piriton Syrup works too, I prefer it to the tablets.

Sleeplessness makes life difficult - both myself and my husband have been waking in the small hours recently and unable to get back to sleep, so i know how it feels. Perhaps try a relaxation CD of some kind? The piriton sounds like a good idea too.

Wishing a full night's sleep very soon  ;)

Like Piriton, Nytol has an antihistamine in it. I've relied on it on many occasions.  You can't take antihistamines all the time or the body gets used to them but they are great to take now and again.  I tend to use them if I have to sleep somewhere different and need to be on form the next day.  Also find they break the habit of not sleeping if I use them for a couple of nights.  Dg x

Thanks for your replies.   I managed about 5 hours last night.  Hoping things are settling a bit.  Think it is just being in a strange bed.  Back home tomorrow :)

It's like taking very small children on holiday. You just get them settled and then it's time to come home again  ;D

You do become accustomed to antihistamines. Not sure why but you most certainly do.

I have a great wave sound app. On the nights I can't sleep I use that and drift off to the sound of waves breaking on the beach. In my last house I just had to open the window to hear that. Loved that and hated the house. Hey ho .....app it is  ;D
I also practise breathing exercises and that really helps....sort of mindfulness relaxation techniques.

I go through phases of poor sleeping, having one at the moment. Keep waking up every hour or so or sleep a few hours then wake up and can't go back. Makes me feel sluggish and grouchy all the time. Sometimes a cooler bedroom helps but not just at the moment.  You have my sympathies.

It's the sedative effect that wears off with constant use of antihistamines.  They will still work on allergies. DG x

I use piriton when I need to as it seems to break the cycle of waking.  Very bad nights a the moment as husband has a cough.  Starting to feel murderous.

I am in the spare room temporarily. It is better there, cooler, darker, quieter and the bed is more comfortable and I can open the window if I need to. Only woke once last night.  I need to sleep to function  :)
