anyone know what my consumer rights are (if any)?
« on: October 23, 2014, 04:04:03 PM »

My fridge freezer is under warranty but I can't for the life of me find the proof of purchase. I bought it on ebay (I think summer 2012) but neither PayPal nor my credit card co can find any payment. The co I bought it from don't keep records that far back. (I wish I had paid by PP as they were so helpful on the phone!)
I'm so forgetful and can't remember if OH had another card back then with 0% interest on purchases etc - he might have had.
I don't keep my credit card statements back to 2012 and in my (neatly arranged) Warranties folder, there's nothing to do with the fridge....
My memory's so bad that I had to text the guy who carried it upstairs and installed it (integrated) to ask if he could remember when, and he said he thought Aug 2012.

Anyhow I definitely registered the warranty with the manufacturer so rang them today. They acknowledged that I'd registered the warranty but as their warranty division has been taken over by someone else, they only have my name and address registered. They refuse to fix my fridge freezer unless I email them a copy of a proof of purchase.
I think they should fix it as it's their standard warranty, they received the warranty card from me, and it's not my fault that their computer system has changed recently and my details have been deleted.

However not sure what my rights are. I know I should have kept the warranty safe and I usually do but I do make lots of mistakes and my memory's terrible.

I've just looked at our Ebay purchase history - it lets you go back to 2012.

It says item sold by *****  with a date for an item -( it wouldn't be in purchase history if you hadn't paid.)

Then print the screen pages you want - including your ebay name after 'purchase history' at the top to identify you - (printing available to us at top of firefox screen under 'open menu')

Any good ? -would they accept that ?

I have tried too and eBay go back a very long way.

Phone Citizen's Advice and see if they can help. I have also contacted Trading Standards in the past.

for some demented reason I didn't pay by PP on ebay. I rang up the seller (a white goods shop) and placed the order on the phone.
Doubly stupid as yes, you can trace your PP payments back a long way.
I'll ring the manufacturers again tomorrow but they were very tickbox. If I get nowhere, I'll ring Consumer Direct (are they still called that)?

Your Bank will have records of any payments from your accounts way back.  Most records have to be kept for 5 years if not longer.

Ask your Bank for advice and contact Trading Standards too.  Was it a private purchase via e-Bay though?

I found the damn thing! I'd folded it and put it into the instruction booklet. Must have seemed a good idea at the time so as not to lose it  ::)

Read reviews which say this manufacturer is tricky to enforce your warranty with, so may need to battle again.  Integrated, self defrosting fridges don't seem to stay healthy for too long but this is a record. It wasn't August 2012, but I bought it in March 2013! Terrible, terrible memory  :o

Don't let them fob you off. Easy for me to say. I lost out many years ago, when my warranty wasn't honoured. Wrote letters & eventually was contacted to be told that company had gone bust so not entitled to compensation.

Contact Citizens Advice, they are very good at helping.

Hi
Just wondering have you checked if it was a one year guarantee for parts and labour with 5 years parts and chargeable labour? Or 2 years for parts and labour? I ask because I run a business which involves sale of white goods and the manufacturers can be a nightmare to deal with, if it is in its time limit they should repair, some brands are worse than others and its worse when the company is taken over may I ask what brand? Also just s thought I have integrated frost free fridge freezer it made an awfull noise at one point and just wouldn't shut up just out of warranty eventually I turned it off at socket cleaned it out left it overnight and just thought I'll turn it on again see what happens and hey presto worked been running smooth past 2 years!

thanks, it's got more complicated. I thought I was buying premium German quality, de Dietrich. Turns out that they are in liquidation and are french (were). OH has put his legal hat on to try to get them to either fix it, or to put in a claim against the liquidators for a like for like replacement (German...starts with B).
This lot are a nightmare to deal with. Their CS line fobs you off and turns out they aren't even the company, but some outsourced repair co.
I told OH pick the battles you can win. He's doing a looooong legal email. I no longer want the thing as it's just one of those truly bad decisions that happen in life (more often to certain sheep than others).

I really wanted a freestanding fridge as a replacement but don't think there will be room as the housing is for an integrated (ie overpriced, less energy efficient...I loathe integrated). Carpenter is coming round on tues to see what is possible without destroying the whole kitchen.
AAAAAAAARGH. I feel so stupid having bought the stupid thing on ebay instead of a big retailer, and not having gone for one of the big German makes. I did it for the 5 year warranty. Now realise there's a good reason why fridge warranties are 2 years.....

Oh heck Oldsheep. I have integrated stuff in my kitchen, except washing machine. Been fairly lucky I have to say. Only thing which has broken down twice in about 17 years is my dishwasher. Both times the same problem, water pump broke so it wouldn't drain. Mine are all Neff, which are German.
Don't beat yourself up about buying from eBay. We all try to find bargains to make our money go further these days.

I bought a new frost free fridge freezer a year and a half ago. One month out of warranty it broke down. Had had my previous one for donkeys years. Cost me over a hundred pounds to get it fixed! So you are not alone. Not that that helps any!

OH's barking legal rant   = we came home to find a phone message saying phone to make an engineer's appointment! Mind you, they'll probably try to charge us as they have a reputation for making faults the "customer's fault".
I still think the sooner we change the fridge the better unfortunately.
Fingers crossed that the carpenter can sort out something without it costing a fortune. Ideally he takes out our integrated cabinet and makes the (only) store cupboard smaller, then we can have a freestanding fridge.
Otherwise will get something integrated with a proper company warranty, like Bosch.

thanks for the support. The stupid thing is now getting colder all the time. I don't want to turn it to 0 as we have expensive probiotics in there that need to be kept cold. (OH had C Diff last year).
I suppose better to get too cold than the last fridge to die which wouldn't get below 12 degrees.

We have a pantry-sized fridge in the utility room which stands along side the chest freezer.
