headaches after ovary removal
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:53:28 PM »

I am experiencing headaches everyday since having Ovaries removed 5 weeks ago.  I am not on HRT just antidepressants. The pain is just above the temples especially to touch.  I take paracetamol but this doesn't do anything to help.  Also still experiencing night sweats and the odd few during the day? Is this a common problem?

Hi Winnie

How are you getting on with your physical recovery?

I can relate surgical meno, mine came out in april.  I went on hrt after 3wks but I did have headaches which eased off.

Could it be because your body is withdrawing from whatever hormones it had stored?  And an increase in headaches is on the list of 35 meno symptoms so more likely to be that.

Are you using a chillow, i find it soothing to have some thing cool against my head at night if my head is sore.

Hi Linsey

5 weeks into recovery still find the odd twinge, especially sitting in the same position for a long time, also sudden jarring movements hurt but apart from that OK.  I don't have a chill pillow.  I have been asked to referred to a meno clinic as I don't feel my doctors have a clue at least they are up to speed with everything and have the time to sort things out properly.  I am that exhausted at the moment night sweats not a problem its now daytime.
Thanks Winnie

Winnie, alcohol, caffeine and sugar made my flushes worse, try limiting those to see if it helps

Linsey

I don't drink alcohol unless it's a special occasion, I cut the caffeine as I had read about that, the sugar is interesting will give that a try.  I am taking Sage leaf tablets to see if that helps.  I have been so irritable today short and snappy I hate it not to many flushes.  I think I look so much older since having this operation don't know if that's me and I certainly don't see the positives in life at the moment.

Interesting that you think you had aged overnight.  That was a great fear of mine as I had read an article in the daily mail that a women aged 10yrs overnight due to op and when you seen her pictures she really had due to loss of oestrogen.  I know we shouldnt read rubbish but sometimes we cant help it.

I think i have prob got bit thinner in the face as others have commented. I think at the stage you are at is prob more due to tiredness and flushes taking it out of you.  After my op my weight dropped 4lbs from my normal weight, has this happened to you?  if so that could be a factor.

400iu of vit e morning and night helped me.

Is there any reason why you are not on HRT or not been offered it? Perhaps you are unable to do so. Many specialists prescribe testosterone for women after surgical menopause, in addition to oestrogen - and there is information on this in the menu on the left:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/aftermeno.php (scroll down for testosterone info)
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/testosterone.php

If you are able to do so, in your position HRT will be far better for you than anti-depressants - which may act to help prevent hot flushes but do not replace the hormones that have suddenly decreased from your system due to the operation.

Thanks Hurdity, I was never made aware of this hence why I have asked to be referred to a menopause clinic as I think they have more knowledge.  I was told to wait a month befor taking HRT which has now past but because as I said on a previous page my aunt had breast cancer on my dad's side and one doctor was against giving me hrt for that reason plus I have been on it for 4 years without a break.  Another Doc that I saw had no problem prescribing HRT if I wanted but I said I would wait.  The reason for antidepressants was because I was getting very tearful and down they thought that would help.  Another symptom that has cropped up along with the rest is very dry eyes ?
Thanks everyone.
