HRT which one?
« on: August 28, 2014, 04:58:07 PM »

Hello everyone
I would like some info/personal experience of a good low dose HRT. A couple of months ago I was prescribed Elleste Duet but while I was on it ( about 1 month) I felt really sick, tearful and bloated so I stopped taking it. I also use Vagifem which seems to be working ok at present for my down below symptoms.
I would just like a recommendation for good experiences of a low dose tablet/patch HRT with a positive outcome (so I can ask my DR for it) which will help me feel better as I feel so awful at the moment.
( Low mood, hot flushes, dry skin, feeling antisocial and hair thinning). Any advice or positive experience would be really appreciated thank you x

Femston is a good one to start on which a lot of us like on this forum. Its very gentle fewer side effects.

Some ladies have found it difficult to find a HRT that suits. In many cases it is trial and error. We are all different. It is recommended to stay on each preparation for 3 months to find out if it works. Have a read of the HRTs in the menu on the left hand side. There are lots of different mixes.

Hello again and thank you for your replies.
I've browsed the information on here and it's very informative. I also love this Forum as it helps me to feel I'm not on my own with the symptoms I'm having and not going insane!!!
I'm going to the DRs this week and will ask if I can try Femoston patches so fingers crossed eh?  :)

Just to add rubyring that Femoston is tablet HRT not patches. If you want to take a combi HRT pill then this one is closest to our own hormones. The oestrogen is estradiol, and the progestogen is very like progesterone - called "dydrogesterone".

If you want to go for patches then of the combi patches Femseven is usually better tolerated than Evorel ( if you are sensitive to the synthetic progestogens), but I gather it can be difficult getting it to stay stuck on for a week.

Other than that you could go completely "natural" - and choose separate oestrogen patches + micronised progesterone (Utrogestan).

If you want to go for tablet HRT, don't let the doctor fob you off with Prempak  - although many women are perfectly fine with this, you might as well start with one that is generally liked by women on here!

If you want to look at the different options they are all listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/perimeno.php

Scroll down for patches, and for info about separate oestrogen and progesterone regimes.

There is also Gel Oestrogel or Sandrena Gel plus Ultrageston. I swear by/love gel Hurdity is the same the patches  :) It is essentially the same thing/regime just a different route to take oestrogen.

Hi RubyRing

From what you said your further into menopause than I am, so the "getting used to it again" part may take more time for you.
If your further into menopause, just curious why doctor didn't put you onto a Conti option?

How long did you actually stay on the low dose Elleste Duet.
For me it took over 3 months on low dose to start to get past the doubt, worry, tears, sick and soreness. I was teary the most over first month. The doubt and worry I think caused my feeling of sickness. I feel that was more from the way I was treated by my doc than the tablets themselves.

The first few months were really sore and heavy and it took till around 5 months to get back to a period that felt closer to what it used to.
I'm sooo glad I stuck with it ;)

I would like to move to a Conti option but for now things have settled and I don't want to rock my boat.

Its all part of getting back to more normal levels of the hormones we've been missing.
I had no follow ups by my doc to check levels (don't think this helped me either).
I think a lot of what we go through is flying blind on whats happening and where our levels get back to.

I agree with Hurdity but on the patches, personally I don't think my skin would cope well.
Others have posted patch allergy/soreness and other patch related problems.

Hope you feel better soon

Hello peegeetip thanks for your reply.
I don't know why my dr put me on Elleste duet 1mg, it took 2 attempts to actually get HRT at all and when I almost begged for the HRT I was given that one. I was on it for a month but felt sick, moody and bloated after a few days so I decided it was worse than the menopause symptoms so stopped taking it.

I also had bladder and vaginal symptoms so went back and asked for vagifem ( after reading about it on here) and was given it with no problems. I was even given a appointment to see a incontinence nurse who helped me to do the right excersizes for my pelvic floor.
I have started to get more severe flushes and low mood again so just wanted some recommendations for a different type of HRT.

I have to say this forum is brilliant and I don't feel so isolated with my symptoms. I'm going to the docs again this week armed with a bit of HRT knowledge thanks to all of you on here xxxxx

Hi all, please can you explain the benefits of micronised progesterone and is this only available in a tablet form? Is there a patch oestrogen and vaginal  progesterone combination  thats available for women who still have a uterus please ( UK)
I'm finding Avorel doesn't agree, I'm aware or Femseven but would like to have as many options to discuss as poss that don't include taking tablets
Thank you all xx
