Hi everyone,

Just needed a bit of advice, I had to change me HRT 3 months to a Elleste Duet 1mg due to breakthrough bleeding. I also had a scan on my womb and the results came back that I have fibroids and a thickening of my womb!!

My meno symptoms returned quiet badly about 3 weeks ago so Doc has increased my HRT to 2mg.

My question is......does anyone know how long it takes for the higher dose to work (Iv been on higher dose for 4 days) and should I be taking HRT if I have fibroids and thickening of the womb?

I would be confused too.  If your GP is aware of the womb thickening then I don't expect him/her to prescribe if there is a problem.  Maybe Hurdity will be along later

Are you on the cyclical Elleste Duet HRT and are you still peri-menopausal?

Firstly the lining changes with cyclical HRT just as it does during normal periods - I presume did the scan show it was thicker than normal for periods? It could be if you are still peri that your own cycle was breaking through and the thickening was due to your own oestrogen.

Also re the fibroids - it depends how big they are. I had a scan last year and had a small one but the docs weren't worried about it so OK to carry on with HRT.

Fibroids   
    Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterine (womb) wall and are dependant on estrogen. They tend to shrink after the menopause but shrinkage may not occur, or they may even increase in size with HRT use. Increase is thought to occur in 25% of HRT users and mainly occurs in the first six months of therapy. There is some evidence that transdermal (patch or gel) but not tablet HRT nor tibolone may promote fibroid growth. [ref 24] Fibroid size can be monitored by regular examinations and sometimes by ultrasound scans. There is some evidence that the use of the progestogen releasing intra-uterine system, Mirena may cause fibroids to reduce in size. Mirena is often used in the perimenopause by women who have heavy periods and/or require contraception and can provide the progestogen part of their HRT.

I would ask your doc to  read the letter or interpretation of your results from the gynae or whoever looked at them and specifically ask about the size of the fibroids. We would hope the GP would know what they were talking about but sometimes they are not so clued up about menopause and HRT.

I can't really answer re how long increased dose of tablet HRT takes to work but I would have thought you should notice a difference within a week or two.

Hi Herdity and CLKD,

Iv been on HRT for 2 years as I had bloods done and had a lot of meno symptoms, also at that point no periods for a few months, not really sure if Im still peri as the HRT have given me periods.

The fibroids are only 1.6cms so Ye, tiny and the thickening of the womb Im not sure how thick that is? My doc said that if I continue to get breakthrough bleeding with my new HRT then I would need a biopsy. So, it's just waiting to see if this HRT helps.....hope it does soon as I have a lot of meno symptoms....it's really been an awful few years and Im only 48 now!!

I'm sure my a Doc is advising me correctly.....just feel a lot of the time with the menopause that you it's all a hit or miss with meds and docs etc,
