HRT and bleeding.
« on: June 19, 2014, 07:19:06 AM »

I have been taking kliovance 1mg for just over 2 weeks. I knew spotting was a common side effect during the first 3 months, but it seems I have started a full blown period complete with cramps, irritability and tender boobs. Is this normal? Bit a shock to me at age 60! Luckily I had some STs still.

Yes it can happen to some women - I had six months of constant bleeding at the age of 56 and so changed back to a sequi HRT which gave me a manageable few days bleeding a month. It should settle by the six month mark but if it continues as heavier bleeding rather than just spotting you may want to speak to your GP.

Thanks, Taz. Been a reminder what I'm not missing! I'll see how things go. I can contact the gynaecologist or my GP Monday to Wednesday. I don't want to see anyone else because I might have to deal the usual HRT and being over 60 issues. I want to snap everyone's head off, which is not me normally. I have been fortunate that since menopause I become calmer and happier.

I think that's the problem with HRT - the replacement of the good and the not-so-good hormones can bring back the pre-meno irritability although this does settle after a while with most women. I too found it great to be released from all of the pre-period tensions - the one upside of menopause for me but the meno symptoms got too much and HRT made my life so much better for six years. Hoping to be allowed back on it after my hysterectomy next month.

The good news is you won't need progesterone!

Yes that's what I thought but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the "stop HRT at 60" debate!

I'm lucky to have been directed to a private gynaecologist, who sees beyond the debate. At least I have the chance to see if I can have a better quality of life. I come from a family where many members live to a great age. If I do that I want to be able to enjoy it disgracefully  ;) or at least have a better shorter life! I do hope all goes well with your hysterectomy next month. Let us know how you get on.

Hear hear Ju Ju

That's exactly what I feel (at the moment) - the disgracefully bit anyway  ;D, or even a better shorter life (fingers crossed it won't be cut short too soon but we never know that do we?).

On a more serious note, unfortunately as Taz says you may well be experiencing the effects of the progestogen in the Kliovance. As she says, it is usually recommended to wait until 6 months for the bleeding to settle, but if you continue to experience other negative side effects ( irritability etc) which are constant and interfere with your life - it may be worth exploring a different type of HRT with a different progestogen.

Like Taz I have chosen to remain on a cycle ( still at 61) - my reason was not because of bleeding on conti HRT as I haven't really tried this properly - for me it was so that I did not have to take progestogens continuously and could enjoy a few weeks of oestrogen only - when I am definitely calmer on the whole than during my menstruating years!

It's funny how you get used to bleeding again. I went without periods for 9 months and then 5 months before starting cyclical HRT at nearly 54 - and it was odd to do all that again - tampons and stuff. Now it seems as though I've never stopped ( except when pregnant and breastfeeding of course!).

I hope things settle for you soon.

Thank you, Hurdity. It has helped to know that I needn't panic. Maybe just unlucky. I haven't had a period for 8 years, so it is a shock. I had forgotten all the feelings, physically and emotionally. I shall contact my gynaecologist next week if this continues as I don't want to be bleeding this heavily for too long.

As to living disgracefully and not putting off plans....I am conscious of how short life can be as my only sibling, my sister, died at age 50. My husband and I travelled round the world for 6 months, camping a lot of the time( only way we could afford the trip) several years back. We've going out tomorrow to discuss how we could afford another trip for maybe a month round Europe. Itchy feet not caused by the menopause!

Just an update as this might reassure others. I was able to speak to my gynaecologist, who said that such a heavy bleed was unusual and unlucky. If she looked inside my womb she would expect to see the bleed coming from a polyp or blood vessel, activated by progesterone. She said it was unlikely to happen again. She sent me some non hormonal tablets to stop the bleeding, but by the time they came, the bleeding had stopped on its own accord.
