One year wasn't nearly half enough, I'd have given her 10 at least.... looking at what she did and the sentence she got almost makes it look like crime does pay, and damned well at that..  >:(

Perhaps if the benefit system actually gave people a reasonable standard of living they would not have to resort to fraud.
I don't approve at all but it's all too easy to be very disapproving if you don't have to worry about money.
My hubby was made redundant in his 50s. As hard as he tried he could not get another job...and he tried for years. We would have been in real trouble if we had not paid off our mortgage early.
My son lived on jobseekers allowance for a year. When he eventually found a job he had to travel over 40 miles to get there. There was no help with clothing allowance or travel expenses. If it had not been for me and hubby he could not have taken the job.
Perhaps if the powers that be looked at the system and actually made it work then fraud like this would not happen. Of course there are always those who abuse the system just because they can but there are others who are genuinely struggling just to live.

£48,000!

She really was taking the proverbial!  How did she get away with it for so long?

I really don't know but if they cleaned up the system then this kind of thing would not happen and the more deserving could perhaps get a living amount.

If she had really been suffering then she would have been un-likely to receive much at all ……… DH couldn't get anything when I wasn't able to work through mental health issues  :'(

How long was she getting the benefit for?

£48,000 is a lot of money.

Was she claiming a  small amount over a long period of time or large amounts less frequently?

Can't read these stories anymore gets under my skin and happens to often nowadays. Benefits were never mean't to be lived off one generation to the next but to tide families over until you could get on your feet as a temporary measure. Seems a lot of these folks know how to cheat the system fairly well and I'm sure this woman is only the tip of the iceburg.

There is little skilled work out there as we have little to no manufacturing industry anymore.
People do try really hard to get work but sometimes there just is none.

At least she was caught.
How can people think they will get away with it?

It's a shame when there are people who are really ill can not get benefits at all.
I seem to remember hearing about a man with Parkinsons who was told he was fit for work, fortunately this was overturned on appeal.
