My next door neighbours are expecting a baby next month. I would like to get them a really good present as they are excellent neighbours. They seem to have all the usual things already. Anyone got any ideas? I did have a thought about a musical whatsit but have no idea where to get one..........

Do you want modern or 'used'.  Have a look at the antique shops near you?  I often see spinning tops from the 1950s in good condition.  Musical jewellery box if it's a girl.  I saw a small egg cup and napkin ring set at a Fair today, 1950s - £20.00 - in stainless steel. 

I took photos of my friend's new baby, had them developed and put into an album, dated.  Old fashioned perhaps.

If you buy silver don't get it engraved as in years to come, it will be of more value.

You can get some lovely Beatrix Potter things for babies. Bowls, spoons, mugs etc. I still have the ones my kids used. It was fun reading the little stories and looking at the pictures as they ate.
You can also get beautiful presentation sets of the books, again I still have ours.

Did you mean a musical mobile for the cot or a music box. You can get some lovely pottery night lights for the babies room.
Silver spoon and pusher sets make lovely keepsakes.
I guess it all depends if you want it to be a gift to be used or one to be kept.

There are also baby albums with spaces for pictures and recording events. First tooth first word.

Better stop now before you get bored. I love buying baby gifts as you can probably tell

Don't go to Mammas and Pappas    even I got broody and that was last year  but OH the prices …….

My daughter was given a lay  back baby bath seat. You put it in the bath, put baby in it & no more more hanging on for grim death to a squirming baby. However, they may have this already. Another thing she got was a Taggie blanket, a blanket edged with tags, which babies adore. You can get quite plain, small ones or much larger ones depending on how much you want to spend. I bought one for my niece's second baby. It had a teddy bear head in one corner of the blanket, other edges were covered in little tags. My great nephew loved it.

I feel a meno shopping trip on the Horizon  ………. Mothercare, Mammas and Pappas, J Lewis ……

I would say a Taggie too, my grandchrildren loved them.

What about IOU baby sitting vouchers!  Giving them a few evenings or days out together.  At least you wouldn't have far to go if they are your neighbours.

What about a basket of gifts you may have made up ...either for baby or parents with things in it If for parents choc, treats etc and the IOU baby sitting voucher ...If for baby things like creams, vests booties etc and maybe a voucher for clothing .....

My son's GF bought a big basket & bought lots of handy things, like pack of wipes, nappies, babygros, vests etc to give to our DD when second GD was born. Did it all with cellophane & a big bow. Lots of thought went into the contents, mind you she is a midwife.

Agree with the Taggie idea - my grandson loves his 'blankies' which i think are similar - he has several ones that are the same as they can go missing !
If the couple have a lot of baby things already my idea is a fruit tree that will grow with the baby and produce something that they can pick and eat later on.
....or maybe a plant that incorporates the baby's name.
