Does HRT just delay symptoms
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:08:49 AM »

I'm not getting much help from medics so would appreciate some help/information & I do have other health issues which are taking up my time & research.

I'm trying to educate myself re menopause.  If you take HRT it helps with the symptoms but at some point you have to come off it.  Don't the hot flashes, night sweats come back when you come off it & you have to go through the menopause.  I'm confused & could do with some good information.

I read somewhere that one woman found they were worse when she came off it than they were before she started taking it.

Thanks.

There really is no definitive answer to this. Some women are fine and some not.
It does delay things though as you are replacing hormones and then when you stop your body has to adjust to lover levels on its own.
There is another discussion going on about this and if you have a look at the topics you can see what has been said.

I put in the search box "Rebound effect" but it directed me back here.

I've just read the Joan Collins thread where she endorses HRT - but you've got to stop some time haven't you?

Dalhousie -
If you have an early menopause then you need HRT whether you have bad symptoms or not.  Whether you get meno symptoms when you stop taking HRT will be entirely individual and may depend on lifestyle, health issues, life stresses etc.
Taking HRT in peri and post meno stages at the normal age (around 50) is entirely a personal choice and will depend on how much the meno symptoms are affecting your quality of life.  Most of us would say " live for today" - if you are suffering badly with meno symptoms nobody can tell you when the symptoms will subside, if ever!!!! Worrying about what will happen when you do have to come off HRT - and many women are now taking it well into their 80s - is not a good way to look at the situation.  I lost 3 years of my life because I came off HRT too soon at 49 and gave in and went back on at 53.  I'm now 58 and taking another break from HRT and the symptoms are not so bad this time - maybe my body has adjusted better this time, who knows!!!
Instead of asking what will happen when you come off HRT, ask what is your life like now?
If the meno symptoms are reducing your quality of life and you don't have any health issues preventing you from taking HRT, then it may be worth giving HRT a try.  Read up all the info under the headings to the left of this screen - perhaps make lists of positives and negatives.
GEt back to us with any questions.  Good luck  DG x

This is the thread dalhousie
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,24084.0.html

To search you have to go to the main forum home page otherwise it only searches within the area you are at the time so if you are in one thread it will only find that one!

I agree with Dancinggirl's post too
