Is anyone else taking Tibolone?
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:17:26 PM »

My GP prescribed these for me on Thursday so i've only taken them for three days. Today I counted 6 flushes in the morning but only one 'warm glow' this evening - usually I can have anything up to around 15 or 18 mega-flushes a day. Just wondered how other ladies had found them and if they really were as good as my GP assured me they might be  :-\

I took them for a few months and found them quite good fro the meno symptoms but my teenage acne returned which I really couldn't cope with. If it hadn't been for the nasty spots I would have stayed with it.  I think it suits quite a few women.  Good luck  DG x

Interesting you mention acne. I have very dry skin, but twice have had what the called acne years back. I will be 60 in a couple of weeks, but have been trialling Tibolone for 3 and a half months. I hadn't noticed any benefit other than I am sleeping better, but now the 'acne' has started. I was originally prescribed antibiotics, but they didn't help. I found it eventually went after about a year, but it was unsightly, irritated and left permanent redness, so I am not happy. I still have hot flushes, but they have never been too bad and I would never have sought HRT for just that. I took Tibolone as I have very low levels of testosterone, but recent a blood test shows there is no change. The sex hormone binding glob was low a year ago, but now is even lower. I don't know what that means, but I have an appointment with a private gynaecologist next month, so I will find out.

Ju Ju
I personally wouldn't expect my testosterone level to be high at my age (58). Tibolone is supposed to be good for libido and when I tried it i was certainly a bit more 'in the mood'.
I'd be interested to know what your private gynae has to say on all this.  DG x

Hi Bo Snow

To do a Search of all threads you need to go to the home page of the forum and then put Tibolone in the search box at the right of the menu bar - I got 4 pages of threads coming up.

Not sure if this will work (the results of my search):

http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=search2

Juju I would be interested too. Is Tibolone actually supposed to increase testosterone? I thought it was a compound which mimicked the action of it. Also isn't it free T that's supposed to be important? If it's all bound up as SHBG then it isn't active is it? Or maybe it acts as a reservoir? Sorry if I've got this all wrong - haven't read about it recently!

Whatever it does - if you haven't noticed a difference in libido, then it isn't working which sounds like it did for you Dancinggirl. I could do with something for that too!

According to my dr, Tibolone is a synthetic steroid compound which has a 'mixed oestrogenic, progestogenic and mild androgenic effect.'

This I assume is similar to some of the synthetic C19 progestogens which are more androgenic.

I don't know if it affects testosterone levels but some of the side effects can be 'male' - such as acne.

I am trialling Tibolone not just for low libido, but also low energy levels. The first is sad, but my lovely husband says sex is just the icing on the cake, but the second affects every aspect of life. I know it hasn't made a difference, as the level is just the same as a year ago. Tibolone is all I have been offered so far and that reluctantly because of my age. The private gynaecologist route is not one I wanted to take, due to the cost. I can't work and we are seeing my son through uni. This seems to be the last stop before looking at Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I'll let you know how I get on. Apparently this clinic has access to testosterone implants....at a huge cost.

Ju Ju - There are so many reasons for low energy and I'm not sure why lack of Testosterone would be one of the main reasons you have fatigue.  Even though you are nearing 60 I would have thought you would have been better with a low dose transdermal HRT!!??
I assume you have had blood tests to look at other deficiencies that could be causing your ultra low energy? Even a lack of Vitamin D can result in low energy!  You mention that your skin is very dry, lack of omega oils which help to balance hormones, help brain function and many other body functions could also be helpful for you?  Do google Omega Oils and Vitamin D for more info.
Stress and depression are also causes for chronic fatigue and cognitive therapy is very effective in helping this. Good luck - do keep us posted about your progress.  DG x

My doctor has been tenacious in trying to get to the bottom of why I have low levels of energy, even looking at things that been looked at before, including Vit D and B12. Everything is normal, apart from very low levels of testosterone. The jury is out as to whether it will help, but I would like to do more. I am not depressed. I am not expecting a magical solution, but I have a responsibility to myself and my family to try to find out what is wrong.

You are doing all the right things so I'm sure you will find a way forward. It'll be interesting to know what your Gynae says - perhaps give normal HRT a go?? Good luck  DG x

I'll let you know how I get on. The appointment won't be till the 12th March. The gynaecologist was recommended by my doctor, though not listed on this site. I saw a private gynaecologist a few months ago. Although I stated my age before, she was apologetic but didn't feel she could help. What a waste of money! This time I contacted the clinic by email, stating my age. We'll see what happens.
