Bleeding with oestrogel, is that normal?
« on: March 05, 2014, 06:25:28 PM »

I'm 9/10 days in taking HRT for first time and have just started to bleed. Is that my own natural period coming through? Does that mean I'll get another bleed after I finish the ultrogestan part of the cycle?

Sorry for all the questions but all very confusing!

It is confusing!  Have you read the menus, left of screen or do a 'search' …….. I'm sure someone else will be around to offer more advice!

I did do a search and not a lot came up but does seem that it is possible for your natural period to break through.

A lot depends on your age and the stage you were at when you began treatment with Oestrogel- how long since your last period for example?

It's quite unusual I'd say to get breakthrough bleeding after only 9 days. Although I've had it, it was after many weeks on a long cycle HRT regime and was either my own cycle breaking through having one last shot! ( but I was 54-55 by then) or a dip in absorption.

I think you have to wait and see to be honest. Unexpected bleeding is common in the first few weeks, but everyone is different and the reasons for it very different.

My last period was January 6th. I did still have periods before taking HRT (I'm 47) a few days ago it's just that they were becoming less regular.

I would say that it is definitely your own cycle breaking through then! You may well get another period when you finish the utrogestan part of the cycle and it is important to follow the directions and to take the full course. The amount of Utrogestan is calculated to ensure that all the lining built up by the extra oestrogen is able to come away - for most women.

As you get further into menopause your own hormones will break through less and less and so the cycles should become more predictable.
