Deed poll is very quick and simple but it does mean you have to have all your official documents re-issued, not just notify people (eg passport: expensive). They send you a starter list, but only do (I think) one or two official copies, so you end up paying to get more certified, as everyone here seems to want certified copies - and police stations and doctors won't do that any longer.
Friend of mine thought of reverting to her maiden name, then got a bit overwhelmed by all the notifications and the hassle involved.

Interesting how it varies in different countries. Scotland seems very civilised! In France, if you divorce, you are obliged to revert to your maiden name, with all that that entails.

Well I have made a start yesterday - with my bank. And doctors this morning. Next will be pension and credit card and then the DVLA etc etc etc. working my way down the lengthy list. Anyone taking bets on how long all this will take? I reckon 2 months but then I am an optimistic soul!

Hi Bramble - I haven't changed name recently, but I have kept my maiden name since marriage.
It gets complicated, often I can't remember which name I have used, say for booking restaurant tables or holidays, things like that. OH is used to being called "Mr Limpy", takes it well, bless.

The main thing I think needs really thinking about are "Identity" documents e.g. Passport and Driving License. It's all very well changing your name, but there come occasions when you need to prove who you are. Taking out mortgages or other large loans come to mind. Get identity documents sorted out, then prioritise who else you need to tell. Bank definitely, not sure about doctors?

Well it has only been 2 weeks since I started all this name changing carry on and I have just about completed it. Just waiting for my passport to come back so I can do my driving license. But apart from that, all is done. Including changing the 101 places my previous email address was stored! So no big deal after all. Apart from the passport office, everyone else has sent my documents back by next day mail so I have had a very quick turnaround on my original documents.

All places that involve money, passport office and DVLA require the original documents to be sent. Some places like tax and council, did it over the phone. Other companies had name change forms to send and another (post Office savings) needed certified copies of my documents.

It has been very straightforward. Much to my delight. Although it will take me a while to get used to my 'new' name!
