ADVICE PLEASE REGARDING STARFLOWER CAPSULES
« on: January 20, 2014, 03:53:34 PM »

 :boobs: Hi Ladies
I have read many good reviews from some of you about how starflower oil capsules have helped minimise the dreaded hot  flushes/sweats, I have read on the container to take one capsule a day with food, does it matter what time of the day or just personal choice to suit
Thanks Ladies your advice appreciated ;)

Just wanted to say welcome to the forum Amelia. I'm sure someone who has experience of Starflower will be along soon.

Hi and Welcome Amelia60
I like to take my omega oils and vitamin D in the morning with breakfast and if I'm feeling tired & run down I take an iron tonic with B Vitamins as well with lunch.
Starflower is just a good source of omega oils which are good for the joints, heart, brain function and skin.  I think omega oils are supposed to help balance hormones, however, I have never found it helped with flushes and night sweats.  I'm afraid the only thing that really works against flushes is HRT.  If your flushes and night sweats aren't too bad then taking omega oils together with Vitamin D and increase foods with calcium to protect your bones is certainly beneficial. Try to do plenty of walking, swimming or dance classes as well.
I took a break from HRT for three years 5 years ago and spent a fortune on herbal remedies and extra meno supplements with no results.  I finally gave in a went back on HRT.  I am now on another break from HRT and the flushes are not so bad this time - just suffering badly with Vaginal Atrophy - oh the joys of being a women.
Keep us posted about your progress.  DG x

I have been taking Starflower capsules since March last year and they helped with flushes and sore boobs. I take the Boots 1000mg ones, one every morning when I get up. I did stop taking them once for about 10 days and I really noticed the difference so I will keep taking them forever probably as they have lots of other benefits apparently. Hope they help you x

Forgot to say that I am also on HRT which I started before the Starflower Oil. The combination works really well for me but everyone is different with varying degrees of symptoms. Hope you find what works for you x

Do you feel able to share your "minor health issues" with us?  Some GPs are very against HRT for all kinds of reasons and sometimes it's healthy to question their wisdom.
If you are suffering badly from flushes, night sweats etc. there are some alternative drugs that can help - I think they are under 'Prescribable non-HRT' in the list to the left of the screen.
Menopause can be really tough to cope with.  I'm sitting here with a fanny that is burning like crazy due to Vaginal Atrophy- I'm using local oestrogen that is supposed to help but at the moment it's not working!!!!
Also look under 'Alternative  Techniques' to see if there is anything there you want to try . I believe some ladies find acupuncture very helpful.

 :cheer:Hi Dancinggirl
The reason My Female GP  advises me against HRT is because I have High Blood Pressure and Chronic Kidney Disease, both being controled by medication, My GP did offer a few medication choices, clonidine was one of them but after 2 years of trying this medication I did not feel it worked for me, there was an alternative of giving an Anti depressent a try , but I did not want to go down that route.

Amelia60 - you poor thing - I wouldn't describe chronic kidney disease as "minor" - that is really tough.
Ok, so, you need help in coping with your meno symptoms. ???
I am probably not the right person to advice on this as I'm afraid I've tried virtually everything and, apart from HRT, nothing worked for me.  That is not to say that others have not found relief using alternative methods and I'm not suffering too badly with meno symptoms at the moment without HRt because at the moment I have the time to look after myself e.g. eat well, take lots of walks and get enough sleep etc.
As I mentioned before, diet, exercise and a few good basic supplements like the omega oils are very important - in other words good lifestyle choices. I know a few friends tried acupuncture and found it very helpful, so maybe try that. I think you may have to be careful about some of the herbal remedies because of your kidney problems so I would recommend advice from a reputable therapist/doctor.
Hopefully others will be along soon with some help and advice.  DG x
