Hi, I sure it's because one of its ingredients is peanut oil.

The pessaries have been discontinued and do not contain peanut oil but the cream is still available and does contain peanut oil so I think there is another reason roseclimber.  There is a number to ring if you want some medical info

"Janssen-Cilag has discontinued Ortho-Gynest (estriol) pessaries 0.5mg in the 15 pessary pack size. Stock is expected to last until the end of November 2013. Medical information on 01494 567444"

CLKD - we've had this discussion already. Manufacture has been discontinued but obviously it will take a while for stocks to run down which will differ in each area.

roseclimber - to add to Taz's post - I rang the number a while back (I e-mailed and this was ignored!) because I use these too and they told me they had been discontinued for commercial reasons, one being that they were an old product...? I mean Milk of Magnesia is an old product too but still available!!

I don't know what I will do either because I don't like the idea of the messy creams and using an applicator which has to be washed. Hopefully something else will replace them?

The cream will do the same job though....
Here is the info

Taz - I just looked at your link before posting and it's to my post so I've just repeated myself!! Hope no-one minds reading same thing again!

My pharmacy has now run out of Ortho-Gynest pessaries. They have been discontinued (as we suspected). I've been to the GP and he says there is no 'like for like' alternative. The options are Vagifem pessaries, Ovestin cream or Gynest cream - I've opted for the Gynest cream for now. Very disappointed  :(

Are you disappointed in the results from the Gynest?

I think that ladies who have a regular script for this should have been warned by their GPs  :cuss: I have sent 2 e-mails to our surgery with no response, my friend who is a Pharmacist has found varying information on the different web-sites for the Company who produces this and on the NHS sites - confusing!

No CLKD I'm just disappointed the pessaries have been discontinued as they suit me very well. I have yet to start with the cream as there are quite a lot of pessaries left from my previous prescription so it will be a few weeks before I do.

How about keeping the pessaries ……… in case the cream needs a top up?

Read this with interest. I was given vagifem However isn't the orthogynest a bio identical hormone instead? i was hoping to get these instead of vagifem pessaries so disappointed to read that they are now discontinued.

This is a very old thread - they were discontinued several years ago as you see.

The hormones used in all local oestrogen products in UK are bio-identical - ie they are synthesised to be structurally identical to the hormones made in our bodies. Vagifem contains estradiol - our main oestrogen hormone, as does the Estring, and the estriol creams (including Ovestin) contain - well - estriol.

I agree it was very disappointing that these excellent pessaries were discontinued - because the only other estirol products as you see are creams which involve having to wash out an applicator. I loved the OGs :)
